Families are struggling and in need of support. The support required is multifaceted and dependent on each families unique needs.

The aim of my PhD research was to identify the unmet support needs of families/carers across various sectors, including disability, mental health, and aged care. One of the significant findings of my research was that the service system itself was a major stressor for carers. This was before the introduction of the NDIS.

For many PDA families, there is significant stress caused by the lack of widespread recognition and understanding of PDA within the service system and the broader community. This lack of understanding and constant need to educate others and advocate adds significantly to the stress load of parents/carers and is an issue that must be addressed.

Selective hearing may not be the reason. One in ten children has low working memoryโ€”a crucial system for retaining information and learning.

So what is working memory?

Working memory is a temporary workspace in the brain that allows us to hold and process information, and plan ahead when solving problems or completing tasks. Think of it as a short-term storage system that retains a thought while you listen for more detailโ€”like remembering the name of a destination while you wait for directions.

Children with low working memory often struggle to complete tasks, follow multi-step instructions, comprehend reading or finish maths tasks. Their parents often say, โ€œhe/she just doesnโ€™t listen. It goes in one ear and out the other!โ€

Sound familiar?

Cogmed is a research-based memory training program developed by neuroscientists to improve working memory and attention. The training is based entirely on an app designed to challenge your child with a series of cognitive exercises to improve their working memory.

Registrations for our Summer Cogmed Training Program are closing soon. Guided by one of our child psychologists, the program runs across the Victorian Summer school break and can be completed at home.
