World Su***de Prevention Day: Let’s Make a Difference Together 🌍
Since a young age, I’ve been faced with the reality of mortality—my own and that of those I love. At 17, I lost a dear friend to muscular dystrophy. We knew his time was limited, and watching him fight each day to stay alive was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Just a few months later, another friend died by su***de. I was devastated and angry. After seeing one friend fight so hard for his life, I couldn't comprehend how someone could give up on theirs. But at 17, I didn’t fully understand mental health.
As I grew older, I learned that mental illness can be just as debilitating as physical illness. My friend with muscular dystrophy fought a visible battle, while my friend who died by su***de was struggling with an invisible one. This year, I lost another childhood friend who had been battling his mental health for years. This time, I felt no anger, just deep sadness. I wished he had reached out for help. He was so loved, and his absence has left a void in so many hearts.
Working in construction, I’ve seen first-hand how mental health can take a toll, especially in high-risk industries. It’s a stark reminder that mental health needs as much attention as physical safety.
At Courageous Evolution, we are committed to creating workplaces where people feel supported, where mental health is a priority, and where no one feels alone in their struggles.
How You Can Help:
Recognising the signs and providing support can save a life. Here are some tips based on ASIST (Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training) and Mental Health First Aid principles:
🛑 Notice the signs: If someone becomes withdrawn, talks about feeling hopeless, or shows signs of distress, don’t ignore it. Watch out for changes in their behaviour or appearance.
🖐 Reach out: Simply asking, “Are you okay?” can open the door to conversation. Let them know you care.
👂 Listen non-judgmentally: Sometimes, listening is the most powerful thing you can do. Avoid giving advice or making judgments.
💬 Ask directly: Don’t shy away from asking, “Are you thinking about su***de?” It can give them the chance to express what they’re feeling.
🆘 Help connect them to support: Encourage them to reach out to professionals or support services. You can call Lifeline (13 11 14) or the Su***de Call Back Service (1300 659 467) for guidance.
👫 Stay with them until help is available: If someone is in immediate danger, don’t leave them alone. Help them get the support they need.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please ask for help. You are loved, and your life matters more than you may ever realise.
