Don't believe the myths, Mama!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't believe that you need to separate from your baby or child to teach independence!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't believe that you need to punish your child to teach a 'good' manners or 'acceptable' beahviour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don't believe that you need to train your baby to sleep in order for them to learn how to self-soothe.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's all bu****it. It's all based on cultural ideals. It's outdated nonsense.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As Maya Angelou says, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We know better now. Science knows better.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The skill of self-soothing is a developmental milestone that cannot be rushed. And I'd argue it's not really a skill that is ever used 100% of the time by anyone - sometimes as an adult, I can self-soothe. Other times I can't! Actually most of the time I can't. I talk to my husband, I hug it out, I read a book, I make myself a cup of tea.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, yes I want my son to be able to self-regulate his emotions and as a seven-year-old he is doing that more and more...at his own pace.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But what I want most is for him to know that there are people that care about him, that he can rely on to be here for him unconditionally - no questions asked! Day or night! I want him to know that we take care of each other. That we believe in interdependence. That there is never anything he can do that would stop me caring for him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So don't worry about the BS that floats around our culture. Hug those babies. Hold those toddlers. Make space for big feelings. Work on your own triggers. Grow alongside your children. It's a beautiful journey of consciousness they're taking you on!
