The journey of helping to raise a child is one of the most incredible experiences we have in life π±
Wether it's a mum, dad, aunty, uncle, grandparent, foster parent or sibling. The love shared between our little treasures is so uniquely inate to our being, however sometimes we push aside the grandure of our mutual gift.
The biggest lesson I've learnt and something I took for granted for many years was to simply 'Be Present'.
For so long I'd sit on my phone, allowing my kids to just play together. Or I'd occupy myself with house work or my own hobbies. My kids would call me to come and see something for the 100th time that day and I'd just want to be left alone π
Then one day I decided to set myself a challenge. That for 2 weeks, NO MATTER WHAT, I would give my 2 distraction seekers my undivided attention π©βπ¦βπ¦π©βπ¦βπ¦π©βπ¦βπ¦
If I was mid way through my make-up and they wanted me to see something, I'd go.
If dinner was on the stove and they needed me, I'd pause and go to them.
If I was in the middle of a π© I'd finish that off (lol) then go.
But for all purposes, I would give them the attention and time they were asking for.
What I found in those 2 weeks was remarkable π€―
The insightful thoughts they instantaneously had and were desperate to share, were things i was no longer shrugging off.
The wonderous ideas they had mindfully created, were no longer thoughts that simply disappeared into the eather.
I was blown away by the raw intelligence they were so excitedly wanting to share, and for the first time in my life, giving then my full attention, I felt like I was finally fulfilling my role as a mother.
Their life was a gift to mine and my time is a gift to them. In this harmony there is a flow of love and care that is beyond words.
All a child wants is time and attention. All I want as mother is to give my child the security of knowing they are wanted, loved & heard. That they are my priority, over things I can always come back to. That their brilliant ideas, wonderous playscapes and picasso drawings are the most inspiring gifts I have been graced with.
I changed my whole outlook on what it meant to be a parent in 2 weeks. Try it for yourself.
