June 21st represents Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Global Awareness Day. The aim of the day is to increase public understanding of MND, promote research, and advocate for better care and support services for individuals living with the disease. MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the motor neurons, the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As these neurons degenerate and die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost, leading to muscle weakness and wasting.

Falls Prevention:
Falls and poor balance are major problems associated with ageing, as they can lead to serious injury or disability, a decrease in confidence and fear of falling, and restriction of activity, each resulting in reduced quality of life and independence. At least one-third of community-living Australians aged 65 years and over fall every year.

There is good evidence that exercise can prevent falls in older people by decreasing several key risk factors. For example, exercise can improve:
โญ๏ธ Balance & balance confidence
โญ๏ธ Walking speed
โญ๏ธ Muscular strength & power
โญ๏ธ Mental ability and mood
Exercise programs should include challenging balance training, dual-task motor and cognitive exercises, and look to improve the speed of movement through high-velocity (power) training and functional movement. Exercise must be of sufficient duration (3+ hours per week) and ongoing. The exercises should be safe while progressively challenging developing functional balance and strength.

Itโ€™s important to note that individual responses to exercise may vary. Therefore, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist can work with you to prescribe and progress an individualised exercise program tailored to your specific needs and conditions.

Bowel/Colorectal Cancer:
Did you know?
Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australian men. Symptoms may include: changes in bowel habits, blood present in stools and/or persistent abdominal discomfort (cramping, gas, pain).
Regular screening, including stool tests and colonoscopies, is recommended, especially for men over 50 or those with a family history of bowel cancer. This increases the likelihood of early detection and successful responses to treatment. Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, limiting alcohol, and not smoking are also thought to significantly decrease the risk of developing bowel cancer.
Exercise has been shown to provide the following benefits for individuals with bowel cancer:
๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ Improved Digestive Health: Regular physical activity can promote healthy bowel movements and reduce constipation, a common issue during cancer treatment.

โœŠ Greater Sense of Control: Exercising gives patients a proactive role in their health management, fostering a sense of control and empowerment.

โš–๏ธ Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial, as obesity is a risk factor for both the development and recurrence of bowel cancer.

It's important to note that individual responses to exercise may vary. Therefore, it's recommended for individuals to consult with their healthcare team before commencing any new exercise program.

Did you know?
Diastasis Re**us Abdominis (DRA) is a condition characterised by the separation of the re**us abdominis muscles (often due to pregnancy), which are the paired muscles running vertically on each side of the anterior wall of the human abdomen. Whilst DRA commonly resolves spontaneously for most women in the postpartum period, for those experiencing persistent increases in their inter-recti distance (IRD), conservative treatment such as exercise becomes highly beneficial.

๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿป Exercise currently stands as the primary treatment method, with numerous studies have confirming the positive impact of exercises on reducing IRD, by using methods such as abdominal exercise programs, which aim to target transversus abdominis and re**us abdominis muscles. As well as postural training and education on proper mobility and lifting techniques

โ€๐Ÿฉบ Tailored exercise programs can reduce severity and enhance overall abdominal strength

๐Ÿ™ Exercises to avoid without advice are abdominal sit-ups, crunches and lifting excessively heavy objects, as these exercises may cause abdominal wall bulging. Embracing a holistic approach not only supports DRA management but also enhances overall well-being.

It's important to note that individual responses to exercise may vary. Therefore, it's recommended for individuals to consult with their healthcare team before commencing any new exercise program.
