💙World Diabetes Day - 14 November 2025 💙
The theme of this years WHO (World Health Organization) World Diabetes Day is "Diabetes across life stages".
The number of people living with diabetes rose from 200 million in 1990 to 830 million in 2022 📈
Diabetes can affect anyone from kids to older adults and happens when the body can’t properly control blood sugar levels. Without enough insulin (the “key” that helps glucose enter our cells for energy), sugar builds up in the blood and can cause long-term health issues.
There are two main types of diabetes: type 1️⃣ and type 2️⃣.
For people with type 1️⃣ diabetes, insulin is not produced.
For people with type 2️⃣ diabetes, insulin is only produced in small amounts, or does not work as well as it should.
Here’s how diabetes can show up across life:
👶 Children: Type 1 diabetes often starts when the immune system affects insulin-producing cells.
👩🦱 Teens & Young Adults: Hormones, growth, and lifestyle changes can make blood sugar management tricky.
👨🦳 Adults: Type 2 diabetes is often linked to weight, inactivity, and genetics — but lifestyle changes can make a big difference.
👵 Older Adults: Age-related changes can increase risk or make management harder.
An Exercise Physiologist can help manage diabetes by creating personalized exercise plans to improve blood sugar control, cardiovascular health, and weight management. They assess individual fitness levels, provide education on how exercise affects diabetes, and monitor progress to ensure the program is safe and effective.🏋️♀️✍
Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58%, while also improving blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity, and overall cardiovascular health. 🫀
A Dietitian can help with diabetes by creating a personalized eating plan that manages blood sugar levels, provides practical advice on healthy food choices and weight management. Weight gain can make it harder to manage your blood glucose levels, so a healthy diet and regular exercise is important to help you maintain or achieve a healthy weight. ⚖📝
Our clinicians don't apply a one-size-fits-all approach. They understand what works for one person may be different to what works for you and consider medical history, individual needs/lifestyle and goals. 🙌
