I had been waiting a long time to figure out what I truly wanted to do. As they say, if you do what you love youβll never work a day in your life. Having always been interested in natural therapy and wanting to give back to horses it was the perfect fit for me. I stumbled across a card from the body worker that massaged my horses and thought well if she can do it then why not me. I havenβt looked back since.

My business Stable Hands Equine Bodywork focuses on massaging the entire body of the horse for an 1 hour session. I do initial consults at the first session which dives into assessing the horseβs conformation and musculature, as well as watching how the horse moves, together with the 1 hour massage. Throughout my studies I was fortunate enough to gain a few clients through my case studies who continue to use my work. Outside of my case study clients, new clients have come to find me through my social media pages.

The biggest thing I enjoy about massaging horses is seeing how their demeanour and body changes almost immediately post massage. Their state of relaxation after a massage is so addictive I find it hard to leave as I just love watching them be so at peace.

I have a couple of interesting cases. One was a horse who was the only one out of four who survived a lightening strike. It was 10 weeks since the incident and he was unable to walk straight, extremely sensitive and jumpy as his hearing and eyesight had been affected, he also had lots of tension over his body. He fell asleep during the massage and his owner mentioned many times that she hasnβt see him this relaxed since the strike. Walking him to his paddock he was able to walk straight and was no longer on edge/nervous. The owner was extremely grateful as she said βI feel he wasnβt the same horse after the strike and now he is more like himself againβ. It was very profound.
Another case is of a horse that went from being unable to be brushed or saddled without biting, unable to stand square and camped under to instantly having all of those issues disappear. The owner was so grateful and has continued with fortnightly massages and seeing the change in this horse week to week has been great insight.

If someone is wanting to go into bodywork for a living I would recommend investing in a good gym and a strength training regime. It is quite physically demanding work but the reward in changing horses lives is second to none.
