March is Lymphoedema Awareness Month, with March 2–8 marking Lymphoedema Awareness Week, a timely reminder of the importance of early support and education.

Lymphoedema can develop after breast cancer treatment, particularly when lymph nodes have been removed or radiation therapy has been involved. Early detection and thoughtful management can significantly reduce its impact.

Care is holistic, often including manual therapy, gentle movement, compression, and skincare to support healthy lymph flow. Our CuraLymph compression range offers tailored options for comfort and effectiveness, and if swelling has caused asymmetry, our shapers can help restore balance for a more comfortable, supportive fit.

💛 Many Aussie health insurers offer rebates for breast prostheses and mastectomy lingerie! Coverage depends on your policy, but there are plenty of options to help make these essential pieces more accessible. We’ve got a quick guide to help you navigate it with ease.

🩺 Government and Medicare

• The External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program allows you to claim up to $400 per prosthesis (or up to $800 for two) through Medicare if you’re a Medicare-eligible Australian who’s had breast surgery due to cancer but this does not cover mastectomy bras or lingerie.

💛 Private Health Insurance

Many private health funds in Australia may offer rebates on breast prostheses, post-mastectomy bras and related extras, but the amount and eligibility depend on your specific extras cover (and often require a letter or script from a health professional).

Rebates may be available for mastectomy bras, compression garments or breast prostheses but policies differ widely and may have waiting periods, limits or eligibility requirements (e.g., a referral or medical recommendation).

📌 What to Check With Your Insurer

Before purchasing anything, contact your health fund and ask:
✔ Whether your specific policy includes prostheses or mastectomy bra/lingerie rebates
✔ What level of extras cover is needed
✔ Whether you need a doctor’s letter or script
✔ Whether you need to claim with private insurance before claiming the Medicare rebate

• Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) may offer free prostheses and prosthetic bras for eligible veterans.
