We’re so excited to share that our school received a generous grant from Variety the Children’s Charity SA which made it possible to install our brand new nest swing!

Two of our staff members attended the Variety SA Dinner at Wrest Point Casino on Friday to personally thank Variety and accept the grant on behalf of our school.

The new swing has already brought so much joy to our students — it’s a beautiful addition that supports inclusive play and sensory fun for everyone. A huge thank you to Variety the Childrens Charity SA for helping us make this possible! 🙏

What's happening in SoSAFE lessons?
In Junior green we have been learning about our People and Relationships Book which will be used by students throughout their schooling. It explores who are OK Helpers and what social interactions are ok with people students might know or don’t know, both in the family and in the wider community.

Senior Green Class have been having a wonderful time exploring their SoSafe People & Relationships Books this term. Through fun interactive quizzes, each student has deepened their understanding of different types of relationships in a meaningful way.
Students enjoy engaging in catchy songs that teach important concepts like the Zones of Regulation, personal boundaries, and consent. These musical moments help turn learning into lasting memories.
We’re excited to continue this journey by adding photos into each student’s book, highlighting the different relationships we all have.

S-Green has demonstrated an amazing love for literacy, with a strong interest in letter recognition and phoneme awareness. Throughout 2025, S-Green made considerable progress in distinguishing uppercase and lowercase letters, and our understanding of the letter-sound relationship has expanded significantly. Their ability to recognise and reproduce letters has been impressive, laying a solid foundation for our reading skills.

As S-Green progresses, our focus has shifted to phonemes, where students have been focused on blending and segmenting sounds to form simple words. S-Green's enthusiasm for literacy is contagious, and their growth has been inspiring. Their dedication to learning is evident, and students consistently approach new challenges with confidence and a sense of curiosity. As S-Green continues to develop their literacy skills, they are set to become talented and enthusiastic readers, able to explore a world of texts with fun.

We're having a fantastic time making sentences with words from our AAC that match the letter of the day - the sillier the better! Our zoomie zombies and purple princess pugs are getting a lot of artistic attention, and S-Green's inventiveness shines through with each new drawing and sentence combination!

In Green Class, one of our major focuses is on improving independence in all facets of school life. The main pillar of this focus is through Structured Tasks. Structured Work is set up to help students to understand:
• what task or activity they are expected to complete
• how much work they have to do and how much time they have
• if they are making progress on a task and when it is finished
• what they should do next.
Our students have made excellent progress in learning the Structured Task system. This has helped them grow more independent in other areas such as:
• putting bags and lunch boxes away
• transitioning around the school
• going to the toilet
• signing in
• putting rubbish in the bin
• exploring books
• using cutlery whilst eating

Thank you to Australian Human Rights Commission, (AHRC), for the lovely book In My Heart by Jo Witek that was donated to Southern Support School’s library. Last term some of our students had the opportunity to talk to representatives from the AHRC with the support of our Speech Pathologists about their views and ideas of children on how to make a range of government services and supports better for them. Such an amazing opportunity for our student's voices to be heard.

S-Orange have been reading lots of books about Halloween and talking about what we like and don’t like about Halloween, which gives us lots of opportunities to use the core vocabulary of ‘like’ and ‘don’t like’. Everyone had been enjoying talking about all the fun characters and events that go along with all things Halloween.
We read a spooky book called ‘Ten Timid Ghosts’ and have been drawing, talking and writing about our favourite characters. The witches were a big favourite with everyone! We’re getting ready to decorate our space with some scary stuff. Cody’s trick spider might make another appearance!

In addition to this week’s Halloween festivities, we’re continuing to work on our longer term art project. Each week we focus on a different well known art work, with a view to working up to a classroom art show later in the year. We review each art work and talk about the elements we like and what we think about each piece, then we do our own original art works inspired by the focus piece. We’ve created some real masterpieces!

This week Orange class share with us the amazing work the students have done with writing.

In Orange Class we offer students a selection of writing prompts to encourage them to write – these include pictures of themselves (including the photos shared on Seesaw from weekends and holidays); and their favourite things, including family members! Laundries! And balls! Amongst other things.

After students choose what to write about, we chat about the prompt using student AAC. Then it is time to choose which letters to write!

In Orange Class many of our students use sensory pencils to write with student letter choices being recorded by the adult supporting them in the writing process. Sensory pencils are a writing tool designed to provide sensory stimulation and tactile feedback for our students. Some of the favourite sensory pencils used in Orange Class include Velcro letters which students can remove from a felt board; fabric letters; balls with letters written on them and blocks with letter stickers attached. The use of sensory pencils has meant that students who hadn’t previously engaged with writing activities with much enthusiasm now enjoy writing and the writing process.

After students select which letters they would like to write, and they have been scribed by the adult working with them, the adult working with the student models writing a sentence related to the chosen photo so that they can look for letters that are in common between the writing pieces with the student.

The final step of the writing process is sharing our writing with someone! Celebrating our success in writing is one of the most important parts of the writing process and helps students to learn that they are writers.

We hope that you enjoy these photos of Orange Class students writing, and celebrating some examples of the writing done by the star writers in Orange Class!

Due to planned stop work action by Tasmanian Unions on Thursday 30, 2025 in the South of Tasmania, it has been determined that our school will be temporarily closed for educational instruction until 11.30am on this day. With a number of staff participating in the stop work action, our school will be unable to provide adequate duty of care for students before this time.

Please be assured that normal school arrangements will resume as the school reopens at 11.30AM. We ask that students do not arrive before this time.

Morning bus transport will not be available on this day.

We understand that this change in schedule may create challenges for some students, particularly in relation to medication, feeding routines, and physical or emotional regulation.

If you have any concerns about how this may affect your child’s attendance or routine on this day, please contact your child’s teacher or the school directly to discuss arrangements.

Hello from S-Red class! Recently our students have been taking part in our Café and Canteen program. It has been wonderful to see some of our students engaging in their tasks, from taking orders and delivering items to class, to assisting with making coffees and food. Our students have been doing an amazing job trying new tasks and engaging with the Work Skills program. Please come and try the Senior café; I can confirm that Kylen and Matilda make a mean coffee, and Izayah and Cooper will deliver to your class while it’s piping hot or your money back!

Last week we also had a visit from some Variety Tasbash cars, who came into the playground so the students could have a look. This was a lot of fun, and all students really enjoyed checking out the crazy cars. Matilda was a fan of the Blinky Bill car, Izayah was very interested in the Motley Crue limousine, Kylen enjoyed throwing golf balls at the flags on the mini golf car, and Cooper was a fan of all of them! He also made sure to double check they had securely locked their cars too. It was a great day, and our students did very well while they were here. A big thankyou to Variety for coming along to SSS!

Reading Time in Red Class
In Red Class, we celebrate the joy of reading through daily self-selected reading sessions. Each child is encouraged to choose books that spark their interest, helping to build confidence, independence, and a love of stories. Our classroom library offers a wide variety of texts, including picture books, early readers, and sensory-friendly options, ensuring every student can find something engaging and accessible. This quiet time supports literacy development while nurturing curiosity and imagination.
