Following the State Budget announcement, ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd spoke to the media, calling on the Government and Department to prioritise safe staffing levels and ensure Tasmanians have access to quality health care 24/7.
“We need appropriate staffing across nursing, medical and allied health to deliver safe, timely care, not reliance on costly agency staff, overtime and double shifts. It’s time to invest in sustainable workforce solutions and implement the access and flow initiative.”
The Government’s budget papers note the intention to reduce public sector staffing and services which will undoubtedly impact service delivery. This reinforces what nurses and midwives already know: without adequate staffing, patient care suffers.
Whether you're covering an extra shift, staying late for handover, or taking annual leave with shift loadings, accurate time and wage records are essential to ensure you're being paid fairly and lawfully. Both state and federal laws require employers to keep detailed and accessible records, and you have the right to request and review them.
From the Tasmanian Health Service under the Industrial Relations Act 1984 to private sector employers covered by the Fair Work Act, the rules are clear: reliable records protect your entitlements, from overtime to kilometreage allowances.
Keep your own notes or texts as “contemporaneous records” - they could support your case if a dispute arises.
Improvements in Tasmanian public hospitals over the years all began with ANMF members who took a stand.
Now it’s your turn to carry the torch for the upcoming 2026 Public Sector EBA.

ANMF Workplace Delegates from the south gathered to sharpen their skills in leadership, negotiation, and campaign strategy in Hobart this week, all with the goal of representing and supporting their colleagues!
It was inspiring to come together, collaborate, share experiences, and leave with new tools and renewed enthusiasm. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed. Your engagement made this session a success.
🗓️ Registration is now open for the next Advanced Delegates Training for the North / North-West region, to be held on Thursday 6 November 2025.
📢 Don’t wait! With the 2026 Public Sector EBA Campaign fast approaching, this training is a vital opportunity to have an impact as an ANMF Workplace Delegate.
💪 The ANMF stands in solidarity with Public Sector Unions taking action for fair pay and better conditions.
Nurses and midwives will continue focusing on delivering safe clinical care but won’t take on extra duties that lessen the impact of others’ industrial action.
This situation lies with the Tasmanian Government. It’s time to come to the table, negotiate fairly, and deliver certainty and respect for all public sector workers (not more short-term fixes).
CPSU members alongside other public sector union members will take industrial action, which includes statewide stop-work meetings in the last week of October.
It comes after a resounding rejection of the Rockliff government’s 12 month “first and final” rollover offer of 3%, with no improved conditions.
Community and Public Sector Union general secretary Thirza White told The Mercury Newspaper: “Our members have voted decisively to take action, and that is because of a failure of Premier Jeremy Rockliff to sit down and negotiate in good faith a new agreement.”
It’s time for the Rockliff government to Bridge the Gap with an offer that respects the critical role public sector workers play in delivering services and helps attract and retain skilled workers in Tasmania.

Superannuation is finally being paid on the Commonwealth Paid Parental Leave! After 13+ years of advocacy, the Paid Parental Leave Amendment Bill 2024 has passed - a huge win for women’s financial security in retirement.
With women taking 86% of paid primary carer leave, this change helps close the gender super gap and ensures your super keeps growing as your family grows. For HESTA members, this could mean an extra $6,500 per child at retirement. It’s a long-overdue step toward a fairer and more inclusive super system.
After continued ANMF advocacy, the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) has finally agreed to staff the Mersey Community Hospital Emergency Department to minimum safe levels, with an increase of 7.77 FTE, positions that should have been implemented 12 months ago.
The THS has advised that these staffing levels will be met using casual pool staff, part-time increases, and fixed-term contracts while recruitment is underway. Any positions that can’t be filled will be backfilled with agency staff.
We hope these measures provide some much-needed relief for MCH ED members.
The ANMF will continue to monitor progress and advocate to the Government for long-term solutions to address ongoing access and flow block across our hospitals.
