Huge win for our ANMF members working in Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) at the Royal Hobart Hospital!
After a lengthy conciliation process in the Tasmanian Industrial Commission (TIC), the TIC President has ruled that the measures needed to address members’ workloads must be implemented, with a report-back set for February 2026.
Our DMI members have been dealing with sustained and unreasonable workloads for years: excessive overtime in heavy lead aprons causing work health and safety issues, and even additional non-clinical duties being added to their workloads in recent months.
Thanks to the persistence of our members, and the hard work of ANMF Organiser Kate, ANMF Industrial Officer Elma, and the wider ANMF team, the Department of Health is now required to meet with the ANMF to develop a proper workload model to mitigate these risks. Immediate relief is also on the way, with a full-time Clinical Nurse Consultant and over five full-time nursing staff committed to in the TIC.
This outcome speaks volumes about the dedication of our members and the strength of collective action. While the fight for safe workloads continues, today marks a significant and hard-won step forward.

ANMF Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd spoke to the media today to raise the alarm on Tasmania’s blocked hospital system.
Nurses, midwives and patients are feeling the pressure every day:
🚨 District hospitals have empty beds they can’t use because there aren’t enough staff.
🚨 EDs are overflowing.
🚨 Patients who are medically cleared are stuck waiting on NDIS or aged-care placements.
ANMF is calling for urgent action:
✔️ More staffing in district hospitals
✔️ Medi-hotels for patients who don’t need an acute bed
✔️ Real solutions to fix access and flow now
Tasmanians can’t wait for governments to keep arguing.
We need action.

The ANMF is standing with Rosary Garden’s staff, residents, and their families.
Closing Rosary Gardens will remove 94 critical aged care beds at a time when our public hospitals are already overflowing with patients waiting for placement.
This will push Tasmania’s health system even further into crisis.
Residents deserve stability. Staff deserve security. Our community deserves better.

Today, ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd called out what we believe is a sneaky move by the Government to weaken the rights of nurses, midwives, and other public sector workers.
In Budget Estimates, Attorney-General Guy Barnett revealed plans to absorb the Tasmanian Industrial Commission (TIC) into TASCAT. The TIC is the independent umpire that ensures the Government follows its own industrial agreements and protects nurses’ workplace rights.
Removing or absorbing the TIC would strip nurses and midwives of critical protections at a time when many staffing and safety disputes are already before the Commission.
The ANMF has formally written to the Attorney-General demanding proper consultation and reminding the Government of its obligations under natural justice.
Our message to members is clear: we will not accept this quietly. If the TIC is abolished, we are prepared to support members to work to rule or take industrial action, including stop-work action.
