Polyvagal theory has had some heat lately, and of course, theories are meant to be critically reflected upon and expanded over time. I still find polyvagal theory to be so helpful and I love the way polyvagal theory defines regulation! Regulation doesn’t necessarily mean calm.

Many people who reach out to me aren’t in crisis.
They might be functioning and surviving.

I have noticed that when people do reach out they just know they’re carrying something that they would like help to process.

If you’re looking for EMDR in Hobart nipaluna and resonate with what you’ve seen here, you’re welcome to reach out.

You don’t need to be certain about therapy, you are welcome to reach out even if you’re just curious.

I’m always reading fiction because it’s my favourite way to learn, feel, and experience the world through other lives.

As a therapist and social worker, I think stories help me deepen my empathy and curiosity.

These three novels explore themes of generational trauma, power and control, coming of age, survival, and resilience. They’re some of my more recent fiction reads that relate to the mental health sphere, I highly recommend.

If these themes connect closely with your own lived experience, tread carefully. Sometimes stories that mirror our own can feel deeply validating and normalising, and then other times that could be activating or destabilising. Trust yourself on what reads will suit you!

You’re welcome to DM and get in touch to organise a complimentary intro call and see if EMDR feels right for you. You are welcome to connect via www.taylareynolds.com.au

My Social Work degree covered trauma, attachment, morals + values and structural disadvantage … but absolutely nothing about how awkward it is to film an intro reel.

Talking to a camera is strangely a lot harder than talking to actual humans. I’ve got the bloopers to prove it.

Moving, shifting around, stretching, fidgeting and tapping can all be ways we gently move nervous energy through the body.

When the news feels dire and scary, the nervous system often goes into overdrive and we can experience nervous energy.

Here are three ideas for deliberate fidgeting to help shift that energy and bring a little steadiness back.

We held our professional peer support outdoors yesterday evening. A rare luxury in Tasmania!

Peer support creates space to share learnings from our therapy practices, reflect together, and challenge one another with care, so we can continue to grow as ethical, thoughtful and supportive practitioners.

External supervision and peer support are imperative to ethical practice. They help therapists maintain strong practice standards and offer even better therapy to the people we work with.

I value both my external supervision and peer support, and feel invigorated after last night’s gathering.

The right question can be grounding when guilt feels overwhelming. Instead of pushing it away, these 5 gentle questions might help you create a little space, clarity, and self-compassion.

Save this post to come back to when you need it 🤍

1. What sensations do I notice in my body right now as I become aware of this guilt?
Noticing and naming sensations helps create distance from an overwhelming emotion, giving us more room to breathe and think clearly.

2. What happens if I breathe into those sensations for 30 seconds?
Breath can gently guide us out of emotional overwhelm and back toward clarity and regulation.

3. What would be helpful right now?
Maybe it’s breathing, curling up, stretching, or moving. Becoming curious about what your body needs builds self trust and self compassion. Your body often already knows how to shift emotion, which we can see when we learn to tune in and listen to ourselves.

4. If I assume this guilt has a positive intent, what message might it be trying to give me?
This question invites compassion and helps us see even uncomfortable parts of ourselves as protective rather than problematic.

5. If I reassure the part of me that feels guilty, what would I say?
Offering reassurance can soften tension or overwhelm and support you to respond to yourself with care rather than self-criticism.
