Amid the devastation of the Central Coast bushfires, Sassy’s story is a powerful reminder of hope.

After fires tore through Koolewong and surrounding areas in December 2025, Sassy was found alive beneath the collapsed balcony of her home - badly burned, terrified and fighting to survive.

Thanks to the dedication of our emergency and surgery teams at ARH Gosford and ARH Homebush, she was stabilised, treated for her burns and against all odds, is now well enough to go home. Both hospitals significantly discounted and capped her care to ensure she could receive the treatment she needed during an unimaginable time.

Sassy’s mum lost her home - and two other beloved cats - making her survival even more meaningful. Her recovery lifted the spirits of everyone involved and reminded us why this work matters so much.

Our hearts are with all families affected by the fires across the Central Coast.

On Saturday 6 December 2025, devastating bushfires swept through Koolewong, Phegans Bay and Woy Woy Bay, burning more than 129 hectares and destroying over 16 homes. The Central Coast has since been declared a natural disaster zone, with support now available for affected residents.

Amid so much loss, Sassy’s story brings a glimmer of hope. 💛
Sassy was found the day after the fire - alive beneath the collapsed balcony of her home. She was badly burned and terrified, but thanks to Emergency & Critical Care Specialist Dr Natashia Evans and the incredible emergency team at ARH Gosford, she was stabilised and placed into intensive care.

She was later transferred to ARH Homebush, where specialist surgeon Dr Sarah Goldsmid and the team treated her burns - and against all odds, Sassy is now well enough to go home.

Sassy’s family lost their house - and two other beloved cats - making her survival even more emotional for everyone involved.

Her journey is a powerful reminder of resilience, compassion and the life-saving work veterinary teams do during disasters. Our hearts are with every family affected across the Central Coast. 🐾✨
