Stretch Therapy We teach the most advanced stretching and neural repatterning system presently available, and are always learning and improving what we do.

We began in 1985, at the ANU, in Canberra. Our mission is to help people to experience grace and ease in the body. Of course, this sounds like a big call, but this is what people tell us all around the world where we run workshops.

It’s happening, finally; we’re excited. We are, we really are, going to take that sabbatical we planned for 2019, but life scuppered that
until now!!!

There are two consequences of this decision:

> We are going to close the ST website to NEW sales *** for six months from 1 July 2025.

*** The Client Portal will be operating as usual, so you will be able to access your purchased programs while we have a break.

And,

> First, we are going to have a big sale of all products – details to be announced here tomorrow.

The backstory.

As you know, we have transitioned the business to all on-line since Covid-19. And an on-line business means that we really can't take a break ordinarily, mostly because of the huge amount of backend stuff that Olivia has to do. And it never stops.

To give you an idea, many countries across the world have their own sales taxes on digital products. These sales taxes have to be collected, reconciled and remitted to the relevant tax authorities every three months.

[As an aside, let us note that if you are thinking about starting an online business, and you're selling outside your own country, this must be factored in—it is a significant amount of work.]

Cheers
Kit and Olivia

Mobilising and stretching session, focus on hips

The terms “mobility” and “limbering” are often used these days. In ST, we regard these kinds of movements as being the best way to incorporate your new flexibility into your movement patterns—this is a process of embodiment, literally.

This is the second part ** of a longer session we shot live on a 2016 workshop in the Monkey Gym at ST HQ in Greenwell Point, and this shows you a variety of bodies doing the movements.

** The first part can be found here on FB at https://www.facebook.com/StretchTherapyKitLaughlin/videos/929924768127786

Contents:

- Wide leg squat
- Full squat
- Whole body lateral circles
- Wrist preparation
- Kneeling hip mobility
- Hip flexors

Resistance is futile by Kit Laughlin

How often do you become aware that you are wanting the thing you’re doing to finish, because you want to get on to the next thing, the more important thing—that you want to do something other than what you’re doing?

Once, about fifteen years ago, this idea was brought into stark relief by the teacher I was working with at the time. I was washing the dishes; he asked me what I was doing. I said, “washing the dishes”, and he said, “I can see that. But can you hear what you’re doing?”

I was washing the dishes, and making noise while doing this. He asked me what I was thinking about, and I said I wanted to get back into the studio to finish a project I was editing. He said, and I remember this clearly, “You just kissed off ten minutes of your life.” This resonates, still.

This kind of ‘here, but wanting to be there’ (in whatever way this can be conceived) is how most of us live our whole lives—we are only half present, or perhaps only a fraction of that.

Literally every aspect of modern life actively conspires to encourage this way of being ‘out of body’: social media; the recent US elections; the economy; the housing crisis; on it goes—and it will never end. By ‘out of body’, I mean being in the world of ideas and concepts, contrasted here with the world of direct experience. I do not know, though, that this is a new thing: I remember, and clearly, growing up in the country in a drought, and everyone around me worrying about this. And I get this: watching grass going brown; needing to hand-feed cattle and horses; dams getting visibly lower every day—these are real events with real consequences.

What do these experiences have in common? They are all examples of resistance to what is.

Hello ... we're still here!

It’s been almost a year since we were last in touch with you all. For the past six years, we have been consumed with family matters—many of our immediate family have died, including both Liv’s parents, and Kit’s mother and brother. Anyone who has been through this will know the extent of the sheer amount of energy (and work) that these events entail. It has seemed endless—but life goes on.

The sabbatical that we announced for 2019 did not happen either. Over the last twelve months or so, we have realised that we are simply exhausted.

In the wider world, the one in which Stretch Therapy is embedded, the overall trajectory does not seem ‘auspicious’. But getting depressed about this, or talking endlessly about this (either by phone, or, worse, social media; who talks face-to-face these days?) is an immense waste of energy. What we can do though is be useful to the people around us, and we intend to redouble our efforts in this direction.

In late 2023 we sold our Greenwell Point property (many of you here attended workshops there), and we are now living in the optimal place to rejuvenate ourselves—Kiama!

đŸ˜» Happy New Year đŸ˜»

Thank you, everyone.

Just over a year ago, we wrote, "It's been a tough few years for everyone, and we think the old 'normal' will likely not return.” Another year later, it does not look all that different.

Yet we are alive, something we are grateful for, every day. All of us will need to be even more resilient in this changed era, and learning how to relax, and how to remove tension from your body and your mind will only be more important. Increased resilience will simply make us more useful to the people around us. We can be more like the eye in the storm.

We thank you sincerely and deeply for your support of Stretch Therapy,

With love,
Kit and Olivia

How to master end poses

End poses are positions that always involve multiple muscles, joints, fascia, and the connections between them. An individual may have restrictions in more than one muscle or joint which makes executing the full, end pose very difficult. Practising the end pose itself is often the least efficient way to achieve the position; you will become an expert in cheating, instead! And it is always the case that one or more restrictions—unique to you—are stopping you going deeper, and removing these restrictions will increase ROM immediately.

Here’s how Kit put it in the “Background to the approach” in Stretching & Flexibility, in the (ii) Partial poses section:

** We have broken down many complex exercises into an elemental vocabulary of what I call ‘functional units of flexibility’. This term denotes the reduction of a multi-joint movement into smaller parts, the classification of which is pragmatically determined— we stop reducing when the effect of a partial pose still can be assessed as being effective in terms of the desired outcome. Functional units are logical elements based around single joints initially and which then include multiple joints and more complex movements. **

The article below explores the 'down-facing dog' pose – perfect ex*****on of the full version of 'downward dog' requires mastery of what we call the “Single Leg Dog Pose” (“SLDP”) as the first step, we believe.

Unlocking the Yoga Poses, or what stops you doing a pose perfectly?

By Kit Laughlin

This note provides a deeper look into how the Stretch Therapy system can help the keen yogi to improve her postures.

In this article I will consider what real, physical limits might stop someone from doing a technically perfect Adho Mukha Svanasana, or down-facing dog pose. Many beginning yogis struggle to do this pose well; most generally and in most schools, the pose is said to be done well when both heels are held on the floor, the inside edges of feet parallel and the knees held straight, the whole spine gently extended from the hip joints and that line continued by the arms and, in the final stage, the face, or top of the head rests on the floor.

Being able to position the body in this way requires multiple capacities: ankle and calf muscle flexibility, the sciatic nerve needs to glide along its full length (more on this later), sufficient hamstring length to allow a significant degree of anterior pelvic tilt while all posterior line muscles and fascia of the hips and lower legs are under strong stretch, and enough strength in the arms, shoulders, and trunk to hold the desired shape against these forces. The beginner’s body has many ways to avoid these requirements: the heels may lift off the floor, the knees may bend, the hamstrings may limit anterior pelvic tilt (with the result that the lower back flexes, instead of extending slightly) and the shoulders may not flex enough to allow the desired line (the shoulder angle will be ‘closed’ rather than open, the position of the arms continuing the visual line of the spine). And there simply may not be enough strength in the trunk to hold the middle and upper back straight against the calf and hamstring forces that are trying to flex the spine, let alone the gentle whole-spine extension that aesthetics require. Let’s look at each of these restrictions in turn.

At the end of the article you will find a video tutorial for the Single Leg Dog Pose.

Mobilising, or limbering as the dance world would label it, can leave the body feeling absolutely magnificent, in particular the joints. It can also be used as a ‘warm-up’, or our preferred term ‘preparation' for a stretching session. This video explores the upper body (see contents below).

This is the first part of a longer session we shot live on a 2016 workshop in the Monkey Gym at ST HQ in Greenwell Point, and this shows you a variety of bodies doing the movements.

Contents:

- Head and neck in all planes
- Side bending
- Shoulder girdle, moving to whole body
- Elbows and wrists
- Pelvic positioning (essential to understanding how to use the ST system)
- Whole body twisting and circles
