β€œMy brother’s decline from dementia has been slow and I think the reason for that is because he is quite clever and always kept himself busy.”

When Dementia Australia Dementia Advocate Bernie’s brother Michael who lives with down syndrome, was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease, he continued immersing himself in his lifelong hobbies and interests.

β€œHe had hobbies and interests like football, jigsaws and politics. We would go for walks – Michael would be ten feet behind me and grumbling but he would exercise.”

β€œHe would always be doing jigsaw puzzles and using his brain. He was socially connected; going out and about and was connected to community and family."

Mental exercise helps to build new brain cells and strengthen connections between them, keeping your mind and brain in their best condition as you get older.
