✨ Behind the Scenes at Southpaws: Morning Rounds ✨

Every morning, our hospital comes together for one of the most important parts of the day: rounds.

This is when our specialist anaesthetists, emergency team, surgery department, nursing and reception teams, and coordinators meet to hand over overnight patients and plan the day’s cases before they arrive.

During this time (8:00–8:30am), our reception team may let you know that the clinicians are currently in rounds. This isn’t a delay — it’s an essential part of ensuring every patient is reviewed, every plan is clear, and nothing is missed between the day and night teams.

Morning rounds are the backbone of how we deliver safe, seamless, high-level care. Your pets aren’t just handed over — they’re team-managed, with multiple specialists and multiple departments collaborating to make sure they get exactly what they need.

Prince came to Southpaws Malvern in early November for an emergency exploratory laparotomy to remove a foreign body — and we’re so happy to share that he’s recovered beautifully.

🖤 Dug’s Story 🖤

We’re so glad to see Dug back on his paws. A couple of weeks ago, he was rushed to us at Southpaws Malvern with what initially looked like a severe haemorrhagic gastro—but our team quickly identified something far more serious: an Addisonian crisis.

Thanks to fast diagnostics and supportive care from Dr Emily and our Malvern ECC team, Dug was diagnosed with Addison’s disease, a condition where the adrenal glands don’t produce enough cortisol or aldosterone.

With the right treatment plan and dedicated monitoring, Dug is already feeling brighter — even back to chasing magpies and possums! 🐾

We’re so proud of this brave boy and grateful to his wonderful family for trusting us with his care and sending through this beautiful feedback. We greatly appreciate the updates! 💛

SouthPaws CE Night Recap – “Paws, Pressure & Perfusion”

A huge thank you to all the vets and nurses who joined us last week for our CE night! We loved seeing such an engaged group diving into the essentials of pressure monitoring, perfusion assessment, and practical tips for improving patient outcomes with all things sepsis! Your questions, case discussions, and collaboration made the night a fantastic learning experience for everyone. 👏

Thank you to our team for putting together another fantastic evening and a huge shout out to our speakers! That emergency and critical care, surgery and specialist anaesthetist collaboration is something we at Southpaws are super proud of. 💙

Remember our retrograde intubation post? This is the brave and beautiful face behind that story! 😍

🐕 Meet Charli! 🐕

Charli was adopted with a chronic inability to open her mouth, distressing her every time she tried. Examination revealed a palpable, non-movable left mandibular thickening. A CT scan showed intra-articular ankylosis of the left temporomandibular joint, abnormal fusion of the zygomatic arch, mandibular notch, and condylar process, plus a fragment possibly, irregular joint margins and new bone formation — a very complex case.

Charli underwent a major jaw surgery, and now she can eat, drink, pant, and even bark normally — for the first time since she was adopted by her dedicated and loving family!

A huge shoutout to Dr James Simcock and the Malvern team for their skill, composure and most of all team work, during a case that had all hands on deck! 💜

And a special thank you to her family for these kind words and trust in our team. Charli is blessed to have found you. 🫶🫶

Meet Sky 💫 — Our beautiful 9-year-old White Swiss Shepherd who travelled all the way from Sydney to see Dr Jeff Buckland at Southpaws Mornington.

Sky underwent an extensive procedure to remove a soft tissue sarcoma from her flank and an a**l gland adenocarcinoma (AGASACA), along with enlarged lymph nodes and a hepatic cyst which were identified on her CT scan.

Each procedure was performed carefully and without complication — and we’re so pleased to share that all tumours were completely removed with clear margins 🙏🏼

We are so happy that Sky has had a smooth recovery since heading back home to Sydney with her family! Thank you for making the trip and trusting our team with her care! ❤️🚗

Peaches underwent BOAS surgery with Dr Benjamin Kaye to prepare for safe international travel, and we’re so happy to hear both dogs are loving life in Japan — and even featured on the cover of Dwell magazine! 📸

For nearly two decades, Moorabbin was home to thousands of patients and countless moments of teamwork, compassion, and learning.

It was where Southpaws began — where specialists were trained, friendships were built, and families found hope.
While we’ve now said goodbye to the physical site, its legacy lives on through the people, values, and care that continue at Malvern and Mornington.
