The truth is, body image is not just about appearance — it’s about how we feel in our bodies, and how those feelings shape the way we live our lives.
Negative body image can affect far more than how someone feels about their appearance. It can impact self-esteem, confidence, relationships, social life, and even career opportunities. Over time, it increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
Eating disorders are serious – not lifestyle choices, diets gone too far, or “phases.” They can affect anyone: men, women, and people of all ages, backgrounds, and body shapes.
💡 Did you know?
More than 1 million Australians are currently living with an eating disorder.
Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness.
Recovery is absolutely possible, especially with the right support.
❌ Myths to challenge (from Butterfly Foundation & NEDC):
“Eating disorders only affect young women.” ➝ Eating disorders affect people of all genders and ages.
“You can tell if someone has an eating disorder by their weight.” ➝ Eating disorders cannot be detected based on weight alone.
“It’s just a phase or for attention.” ➝ Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that require care and support.
“Families are to blame.” ➝ Families are not the cause, but they are often a crucial support for recovery.
✅ What helps: Compassion, understanding, early intervention, and professional support.
If you, or someone you know, is struggling with eating or body image concerns, support is available.
