International Day of People with Disability – December 3

Today we celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a United Nations-observed day dedicated to raising awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people living with disability.

It’s a day to recognise abilities, promote inclusion, and build a community where everyone belongs.

We can work together to create a world that values diversity and supports everyone, no matter their abilities.

❤️ World AIDS Day – December 1, 2025 ❤️

This year, the theme is “No One Gets Left Behind.” World AIDS Day raises awareness of HIV and AIDS in our community and across the world, reminding us that HIV is still a global epidemic.

📊 By the numbers:
• In Australia, an estimated 30,000 people are living with HIV.
• Worldwide, 39.9 million people are living with HIV.
• Over 42.3 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses globally.

World AIDS Day is a moment to honour those affected, raise awareness, and work towards a future where no one is left behind.

☀️ Stay Safe in the Summer Heat! ☀️

With the warmer weather on the way, it’s important to stay hydrated, cool, and protected from the sun. 🌞

Heat stroke can develop quickly, so keep an eye out for the warning signs:
⚠️ Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
• Very high body temperature (40°C or higher)
• Hot, red, dry or damp skin
• Confusion or disorientation
• Seizures
• Headache
• Rapid pulse
• Loss of consciousness (in severe cases)

🚨 If you suspect heat stroke:
• Call 000 immediately for emergency help
• Move to a shaded, cool area
• Remove outer clothing
• Wet the skin and circulate cool air
• Offer cold water if the person is alert and able to drink

💧 Stay safe, stay hydrated, and remember your hat, sunscreen, and water bottle when heading outdoors!

🤍 World White Ribbon Day – November 2025 🤍

Today we stand together to support White Ribbon Australia, a global movement working to end men’s violence against women.

It’s a day to reflect, raise awareness, and take action towards building a future where all women and children are safe, respected, and supported.

We can help create a community built on respect, equality, and kindness.

☀️ Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Off Guard!

Incidental sun exposure adds up — even daily activities like walking the dog, gardening, or hanging out the washing can expose your skin to harmful UV rays. Sun exposure that doesn’t cause burning can still damage skin cells and increase your risk of skin cancer.

💡 Protect your skin every day when the UV level is 3 or above:
• Slip on sun-protective clothing.
• Slop on SPF50+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before going out and reapply every 2 hours.
• Slap on a hat (broad-brim or legionnaire style).
• Seek shade whenever possible.
• Slide on sunglasses that meet Australian Standards.

🩺 Know your skin
Check for changes in size, shape, or colour of existing spots or new spots. See your GP or dermatologist if you notice anything unusual.

Skin cancer is almost entirely preventable — make sun protection a daily habit and enjoy the outdoors safely! 🌿☀️

🌍 World Diabetes Day | 14 November 2025
This year’s theme: Diabetes at Work 💼

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign, reaching over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. It is held every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1922.

Created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization, WDD became an official United Nations Day in 2006.

💙 Diabetes challenges at work
430 million people with diabetes are of working age. Many face stigma, discrimination, anxiety, and limited access to care and support in the workplace.

🏢 Unhealthy workplaces — lack of physical activity, limited healthy food choices, and little mental well-being support — can increase the risk of diabetes and other health issues.

💡 Do more for diabetes at work
Employers can create safe, supportive, and healthy work environments. Let’s “know more and do more for diabetes at work.”

🌍 World Pneumonia Day

Here are 3 things you should know:

1️⃣ Who’s at risk?
Anyone can get pneumonia, but young children, older adults, and people with chronic conditions (like lung, heart, kidney, or liver disease, diabetes, sickle cell, or weakened immune systems) are more vulnerable.

2️⃣ Why it’s serious
Pneumonia can cause fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and weakness. Complications may include respiratory failure, sepsis, and even death — especially in adults 65+. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.

3️⃣ Prevention is key
Vaccines can protect against pneumonia and pneumococcal disease. Pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for young children, older adults, and those with certain health risks.
