You better believe ya girl cried in the physios office (twice) when I found out! BUT then I went home and sat down with myself and thought about everything I knew about the body, along with everything I knew about MY body (my patterns, areas of tension, pain, weaker spots, how I move..), and I put together a plan for myself, along with a commitment to show up for my own recovery and do the work.
I used the foam roller almost a daily at the beginning, and guess what, it hurt! Ofcourse it did..! my body had been in some PROPER holding patterns to manage not only the injury and the pain, but the years of gym/training I’d prioritised without also prioritising enough recovery/body work for myself. I can also see how I’d shifted into over-correcting my own posture in recent years due to being involved in dance. My body was HOLDING IT ALL YALL. So ofcourse it hurt to start unwinding that with the foam roller.
BUT it doesn’t hurt anymore. Foam rolling/massage/myo release is like working out the fascial adhesions and re-teaching the fascia to lengthen and let go.. it’s a process, it needs consistency. I used the foam roller daily or every second day at the beginning. But now I might do it twice a week. And when I use it, I don’t really feel much at all, my body/fascia has let go and lengthened so much because I’ve been consistent with it, so even if things tighten up a little, it’s NEVER to the degree it used to be. It’s very manageable now, and I’m very grateful for that and for my willingness to show up for myself and support my body.
I bang on about foam rolling to so many of my clients and this is why — I’ve experienced first hand how beneficial and supportive it can be along the road to recovery and in alleviating your pain and tension, IF you are consistent with it. It’s like having a remedial treatment in your lounge room whenever you want.
Anyway.. the foam rolling session I do for myself is quite extensive because not only am I working on everything the feeds into/acts on the lower back, but I’m also doing some work around the shoulders because my right shoulder has some dysfunction plus my pecs are alwaysss tight due to the work I do. PLUS I just love using the foam roller, my body always feels so free and open afterwards 🙏🏼
Hope this helps in some way.
