There's something special about being out on Country, walking the banks of a local creek, the sun just starting to rise, and the water calm but full of life. For us at Soulwata Balaz, fishing and crabbing isn’t just a weekend activity — it’s about connection. To nature, to culture, and to each other.

Before we even drop a line or set a pot, we take time to observe the area. Look for signs — the tides, the weather, the tracks in the sand. Every creek has its own rhythm, and listening to Country is the first step.

We at Soulwata Balaz is about teaching our boys about sustainability, respecting the creek and also about giving back to country.

In this episode our boys learnt,
🦀How to be crocodile aware
🦀Where to put crabpots to catch crab
🦀How to dig yabbies
🦀Reading the tides and cast netting to catch bait
🦀Respecting the land
🦀Catch, tie and cook mud crabs

If you’ve ever wandered down to the harbour wall on a calm night and spotted a few headlamps bobbing over the dark water, chances are you’ve witnessed a local tradition in full swing — squidding.

Recently, the Soulwata Balaz — a tight-knit group of local indigenous fishers and ocean lovers — took to the harbour wall for one of their regular squidding sessions. But what may look like a laid-back social gathering is actually part of a practiced, sustainable, and culturally rich way of interacting with the sea.

In this episode the Soulwata Balaz learnt how to
🐙 Catch squid
🐙 Navigate rock walls
🐙 Navigate tides in the harbour
