💗 The 7 Ps of Confident Breast Self-Examination

Have you ever started checking your breasts… and then stopped because it all felt a bit confusing and lumpy?

You’re not alone.

Most people are told to check their breasts, but not how to do it or what they’re actually feeling for.

That’s where the 7 Ps come in.

This simple framework takes the overwhelm out of breast self-exams and turns them into something that feels structured and confident.

Because here’s the truth:
✨ Breast tissue is naturally nodular (lumpy)
✨ Confidence comes from repetition
✨ Knowing your normal is the most important skill in early detection

Doing a quick pat in the shower isn’t thorough enough.
Setting aside the time, slow down, and learn your body.

When you understand what’s normal for you, you’re far more likely to notice when something changes and act on it early.

And that could save your life!

If you’re reading this thinking,
“I’m not sure I’m doing this right…”

That’s exactly why The B**b Project exists.

We teach this hands-on, so you can actually feel the difference and leave confident in your own body.

We had a really interesting experience at the markets recently… and honestly, it has stayed with us.

We were chatting to people about breast health and The B**b Project, and something kept coming up again and again.

A lot of people were… really put off by the idea of checking their own breasts.

Not just unsure.
Not just “I don’t know how.”
But genuinely uncomfortable. Even a bit disgusted.

We heard things like:
“I’d rather not know.”
“I don’t need to worry about that yet.”

And what really struck us…
was how many of those conversations were with young women.

Women in their 20s and 30s who felt like breast health was something for “later.”

But here’s the reality we can’t ignore:
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women aged 20–39… the women who don’t have access to free biyearly mammograms…

This isn’t about creating fear.
It’s about knowing the risk and what we can do about it.

Because avoiding your body doesn’t protect you.
Ignoring it doesn’t make you safer.

What does make a difference is:
✨ Knowing your normal
✨ Feeling confident in your own body
✨ Being able to notice when something changes

We get it, it can feel awkward at first.
No one really teaches you how.
And when you do start, it can feel confusing or unfamiliar.

But that’s exactly why this work matters.

Because your body isn’t something to avoid.
It’s something to understand.

And the more we normalise these conversations, the more people feel empowered to actually take action.

If you’ve ever felt unsure, uncomfortable, or like this isn’t something you need to think about yet… you’re not alone.

But you are worth knowing your body. 💗

Your breasts are closely connected to your lymphatic and immune system.

Breast tissue contains a rich network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes (especially around the armpits, chest and collarbone). These pathways help move lymph fluid through the body, helping clear waste, toxins and excess fluid from tissues.

Think of the lymphatic system as part of your body’s clean-up and defence network.

But unlike your blood, lymph doesn’t have a pump. It relies on movement and breathing to keep flowing. When lymph becomes sluggish or congested, it can sometimes show up in the breasts as swelling, tenderness, heaviness or increased lumpiness.

Supporting your lymphatic system helps keep things flowing.

Simple ways to support lymph flow:
💧 Stay hydrated
🪵 Dry skin brushing toward the heart
🚶‍♀️ Move your calves (walking, calf raises), your calves act as a pump for lymph
🫁 Deep breathing to stimulate lymph movement through the chest

Because breast health isn’t just about checking for lumps.
It’s also about supporting the systems that keep your body flowing well.

Have you ever started a breast self-examination… and then stopped because everything felt lumpy and confusing?

You’re not alone.

Many people expect breasts to feel smooth, so when they start checking and feel lumps and bumps, it can quickly turn into “I have no idea what I’m feeling” and the check gets abandoned.

The truth is, breast tissue is usually nodular.
For most people, breasts naturally feel lumpy, ropey, or textured.

That’s why it can be hard to tell the difference between normal nodular tissue and something that might need further checking… unless you know what you’re feeling for.

And that’s exactly why our workshops include hands-on learning with simulation breast models.

These models contain different examples of breast tissue changes hidden under nodular tissue, so you can practice feeling what something unusual might actually feel like.

It’s one thing to read about breast checks.
It’s another thing to feel the difference with your own hands.

Your b***s aren’t just b***s. They’re connected to your whole body.

Breast health isn’t isolated. Your breasts are influenced by the systems that keep your entire body functioning and in balance.

At The B**b Project, we talk about what we call the Big 3, the body systems that play a huge role in breast health.

1️⃣ Lymphatic & immune system
Your breasts are rich in lymphatic vessels. This system helps move waste, toxins, and immune cells throughout the body. When lymph flow is sluggish or congested, inflammation can increase and the body struggles to clear what it no longer needs.

2️⃣ Endocrine (hormone) system
Breast tissue is extremely hormone-sensitive. Estrogen, progesterone, insulin, and stress hormones all influence how breast tissue feels and behaves throughout the month and across different life stages.

3️⃣ Digestive system
Your gut helps process hormones, eliminate toxins, and regulate inflammation. When digestion is sluggish or the microbiome is out of balance, it can affect hormone metabolism and increase toxic load in the body.

When one system is under pressure, the others often feel it too.

That’s why understanding your breasts isn’t just about checking for lumps.
It’s about understanding your body as a connected system.

And when you learn how everything works together, you’re far more empowered to protect and support your health.

This is exactly what we explore at The B**b Project.

✨ Body literacy.
✨ Breast confidence.
✨ Whole-body understanding.

Reclaiming women’s health.

For decades, medicine studied the male body and assumed the results applied to women too.

Yet women represent 51% of the population, and our biology has historically been under-researched.

That gap still shapes how many women experience healthcare today, feeling dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told their symptoms are “normal”.

But things are changing.

Women are learning their bodies.
Asking more questions.
Sharing knowledge.
And advocating for their health.

Because women’s health should never be an afterthought.

Today we celebrate the power of women who are reclaiming it. 💛

Do you actually feel confident checking your breasts… or are you mostly guessing?

Most people have never been properly shown how to do a thorough breast self-check. At The B**b Project, we teach you the skills so you can feel confident in knowing your own body.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn:
✨ How to check your breasts confidently
✨ What to actually feel for
✨ How to detect changes even under nodular or lumpy tissue
✨ How to understand and track your normal

Because when you know your normal, you’re far more likely to notice when something changes.

This session is practical and supportive with hands-on learning using simulation breast models and guided self-check practice (fully clothed, no need to get your kit off 😉).

New month means it’s time to check on your b***s.

Not a rushed, distracted, “quick prod in the shower.”
A proper check. Intentional. Calm. Thorough.

Set aside about 30 minutes.
Lay down.
Set the mood (yes, really).
Go one breast at a time.

And remember the 7 P’s 👇

✨ Physical appearance
Start with a mirror check. Look for visual changes: skin texture, dimpling, redness, swelling, ni**le changes.

✨ Position
Lay down with a pillow under one shoulder. Put that arm above your head. Use the opposite hand to check the breast.

✨ Perimeter
You’re checking more than just the b**b.
From collarbone → under armpit → bra line → centre of sternum.

✨ Pads
Use the pads of your first 3 fingers (the fleshy part, not your fingertips).

✨ Palpation
Small circular motions, about the size of a 5 cent coin.

✨ Pressure
Light (skin level)
Medium (halfway down)
Deep (right down to the bone)

✨ Pattern
Start in the armpit.
Move in up-and-down strokes.
Light, medium, deep at each spot.
Step the size of a 5 cent piece and keep moving across the whole breast.

This is about knowing your normal.
Building body literacy.
Trusting your own two hands.

And if you’re thinking, “I’m not sure I’m doing it right”, that’s exactly why The B**b Project exists.

🤲 You can’t learn this from a flyer.

We’re often handed pamphlets, posters, or quick instructions and told:
“Check your breasts. Early detection is important.”

But no one teaches you what to feel for.
No one shows you what’s normal for your body.
And no flyer can teach confidence through touch.

Yes, mammograms are important.
They’re clinical. They’re necessary.
But they’re not the whole picture.

Breast awareness happens between appointments, in your own hands, in your own time.

That’s where The B**b Project comes in.

Our nurse-led workshops focus on hands-on learning:
🤲 Practising with simulation breast models
🧠 Understanding different breast tissue
💗 Guided self-checks on your own body (always clothed)
✨ Leaving empowered, not anxious

Because knowing your b***s shouldn’t feel clinical, it should feel like self-care.
