"Kids do well if they can" is a concept that underpins the work of Clinical Psychologist Dr Ross Greene, who presented yesterday at the amazing Yellow Ladybugs conference
For some children, meeting expectations can be difficult due to delays in their skill development. Children who struggle with skills such as flexibility, frustration tolerance, emotional regulation and problem solving, can have difficulty meeting demands placed on them.
When they react negatively, or struggle to meet expectations, they may be labelled as "lacking motivation" or having "challenging behaviour."
Dr Ross Greene challenges this idea, suggesting that when children do have these skills - they succeed! The "Collaborative and Proactive Solutions" (CPS) model is a way of looking at problems from this lens, and collaboratively working with children to problem solve. Solving problems may involve making accommodations for the child, working with teachers and parents, and supporting them to learn and implement new strategies.
