We’re excited to announce that we’ll be working alongside the Demons Ice Hockey Club this season.

Our role will include baseline concussion testing and return-to-play management across their teams, helping ensure athletes are supported before injury ever occurs, and properly guided if one does.

In a fast, high-impact sport like ice hockey, recognising concussion early matters. That means:
• Knowing the signs
• Removing players immediately after a suspected head impact
• Referring for appropriate medical assessment and after-care

Concussion management isn’t about being anti-sport, it’s about protecting athletes so they can play longer, safer, and stronger.

Huge thanks to the Demons for prioritising player welfare. We’re looking forward to working together this season 🏒🧠

Concussions are a very real part of playing a contact sport like ice hockey. As a club, the Demons take injury prevention seriously.

We have sent 10 members of our Junior community on First Aid courses to ensure we always have someone available to help our players out and we have also joined forces with Stop Concussions and Melbourne Headache + Concussion Group to bring you an amazing session for Demons players, families and volunteers that teaches you about how to spot a Concussion and what to do and not to do, when a player experiences one.

Join us with special guests:
* Dr Alan Pearce- lead Australian concussion researcher
* Kerry Goulet - Global Director and ice hockey player
* Dr Scott Haller- President Shift Concussion Management
* Natalie Perkins- Concussion Practitioner
* Cliff Butler- Melbourne Headache + Concussion Group

To join us for this FREE session on Feb 9th (7-9pm online), please register on the following page. https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/uwqbJZNRRDuilQFXS_3nqw

This has been made possible thanks to the support of Victorian Government Sporting and Community Club grants

Still struggling weeks or months after a concussion?
You’re not broken and it’s not “all in your head”.

One of the biggest myths we see is that concussion recovery is just about “rest and wait it out”.
In reality, concussion changes how the brain functions, not just its structure.

After a concussion, the brain often deals with:
⚡ an energy shortfall
🔥 ongoing inflammation
😴 disrupted sleep
⚠️ an overactive nervous system

This is where targeted nutritional support can help.

Not as a magic fix but as a way to support the brain’s biology so recovery strategies actually work.

In our latest blog at Melbourne Headache & Concussion Group, we break down:
✔️ why supplements are sometimes used in concussion management
✔️ which systems they support (energy, inflammation, nervous system)
✔️ a clear timeline of when different supports may be considered
✔️ why supplements should always sit alongside rehab, not replace it

🧩 The key message:

Supplements don’t cure concussion.
They help create the right environment for the brain to heal.

If you or someone you care about is dealing with ongoing headaches, brain fog, fatigue, or sensitivity after a head impact, this is well worth a read.

🚨 Concussion Red Flags: When You MUST Go to Hospital 🚑

Not every concussion needs a trip to the emergency room — but some symptoms are serious warning signs you can’t ignore.

If you notice any of the following after a head knock, it’s time to seek urgent medical attention:

⚠️ Repeated vomiting
⚠️ Loss of consciousness
⚠️ Severe or worsening headache
⚠️ Seizures or convulsions
⚠️ Weakness, numbness or tingling
⚠️ Slurred speech or confusion
⚠️ Unusual behaviour or agitation
⚠️ Double or loss of vision
⚠️ Neck pain or tenderness

These are potential signs of a more serious brain injury — and timing matters.

At Melbourne Headache + Concussion Group, we’re here to guide you through safe concussion care. But if red flags appear, hospital is the safest place to be.

📲 Save this post. Share it with teammates, coaches, and parents. Let’s stay smart and safe together.
