🐼 Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Awareness (PANDA) Week 🐼
Perinatal depression and anxiety are mental health conditions that can affect individuals during pregnancy or the first year after childbirth. These conditions are characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, worry, and overwhelm, which can interfere with daily functioning and the ability to bond with the baby.
In Australia, 1 in 5 expecting or new mothers, and 1 in 10 expecting or new fathers will experience perinatal anxiety and/or depression symptoms. These conditions can affect anyone, and it’s important to recognise that support is available.
“Many new mothers and parents, generally, are so focused on caring for their new babies and physically recovering that they may not realise the toll childbirth and early parenthood can take on their mental health. The transition to motherhood and parenting is a significant change and will affect your emotional well-being. So, if you feel you are struggling, please seek support early and talk to your GP.” - Dr Tanja Mrdja-Getlinger, Psychiatrist.
