AMAZING SUCCESS STORY ☀️

ABA is and should always be about—Connection, not compliance.

Here at Learn to Shine, we work with your children to build connection. We recognise that learning, when you have a neurodevelopmental difference, is hard—especially when that difference impacts how you interact with and learn from your environment—so we need to make learning as easy as possible.

For this young person, over the last three years, we have followed their lead [child-led learning], which has led to drawing as a special interest (it started through craft play and a lot of glue and mess). From this, they have developed amazing skills in drawing, and as they head into school next year, we have started to familiarise them with language they may hear at school. Our Behaviour Analyst connected with the school to observe the prep class and develop their understanding of the curriculum. From this, we can ensure our young person has a good amount of known language and is ready to go, reducing the stress of the transition from kinder to prep. The observation notes were shared with the whole therapeutic team.

The child's mum and Therapy Assistant have worked on the goals of ‘All About Me’ and letter recognition—through this child's interests of colouring and Demon Hunters, Golden is often on repeat in this little person’s home.

This child has also learned to advocate for themselves. At our team meeting this week, the therapeutic team were talking, and it became too loud. The child said, ‘Hold on, guys, I need quiet and wait for two minutes—I get the timer, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6.’ The child managed the environment so it was not overwhelming.

The behaviour of learning and self-advocacy, taught through play and engagement—that’s best-practice ABA.
