This is our lab of excellence in medical science and technology. We’ve got a top-tier team of highly qualified scientists and researchers with advanced training and vast experience. Our technical staff are experts in a variety of lab techniques and equipment. We also have a solid administrative and support team ensuring everything runs smoothly day-to-day.
We’ve invested in state-of-the-art equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges, PCR machines, flow cytometers, and more. Our computer systems are up to scratch for all the data storage, processing, and analysis we need.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards of safety and hygiene, with robust biosecurity measures, including cabinets, sterile areas, and waste management. We also have strict safety protocols for chemical handling and storage, as well as personal protective gear for staff, regular safety training, and first-aid training to keep everyone safe.

G’day everyone,
Over the past few decades, I’ve spent much of my career looking at the link between obesity and type 2 diabetes β€” and the real-life ways we can turn things around.
A while back, we ran a randomised controlled trial here in Melbourne comparing two approaches for people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes:
1️⃣ Traditional lifestyle and medication
2️⃣ Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (or β€œlap-band” surgery)
The results were nothing short of remarkable. After two years:
βœ”οΈ 73% of those who had the surgery went into full diabetes remission – meaning normal blood sugar levels without needing meds.
βœ”οΈ In the lifestyle group? Just 13% achieved remission.
βœ”οΈ On average, the surgical group lost over 20% of their body weight.
We weren’t surprised to see better blood glucose numbers, less insulin resistance, and fewer needing diabetes meds. What did surprise us was just how strongly weight loss itself predicted diabetes remission β€” not necessarily the method, but the amount of weight lost.
πŸ’‘ In fact, if someone dropped more than 10% of their body weight, their chances of remission skyrocketed β€” no matter their age, s*x, or starting weight.
🧠 So what’s the take-home message?
For people living with obesity and early-stage type 2 diabetes, meaningful weight loss β€” especially through surgery β€” may offer a real chance at remission, not just better control.
This isn’t about vanity or quick fixes. It's about evidence-based medicine and giving people back their quality of life.
We still need larger and longer-term studies β€” but these results were a powerful wake-up call: maybe it’s time we start thinking about weight loss surgery as a front-line therapy, not a last resort.
Kind regards,

πŸ’¬ What’s Keeping You Up and Reaching for the Fridge at Midnight? Let’s Talk About Night Eating Syndrome (NES).
Night Eating Syndrome (NES) isn’t just about the occasional late-night snack β€” it’s a real, diagnosable condition that may contribute to obesity and binge eating.
In our study of over 400 participants, 11% met the criteria for NES. That means:
They weren’t hungry in the morning,
Ate more than half their daily calories after 7pm, and
Struggled with sleep at least 3 nights a week.
We found that NES was significantly linked with:
Higher body mass index (BMI),
Binge eating disorder (BED),
And, interestingly, being male.
But here’s the kicker: psychological distress (like depression and poor mental health) was only really a problem in those who woke up during the night to snack. These β€œnocturnal snackers” had:
Worse mental health-related quality of life,
Greater depressive symptoms,
And higher hunger levels.
πŸ‘‰ In short: if you’re struggling with poor sleep and find yourself eating late at night or even waking up to eat, you’re not alone β€” but it might be time to dig deeper. Night eating might not just be a habit β€” it could be a signal your body and mind are trying to tell you something.
Let’s start listening. πŸ§ πŸ½οΈπŸŒ™

When the body needs energy, fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerin, which are then circulated and utilized by muscles and other tissues. When the body takes in more energy than it expends, the excess energy is converted into fat and stored in fat cells, leading to weight gain and fat deposits. In women, an increase in abdominal fat can be observed as they age, even without weight gain. This phenomenon may be attributed to reduced blood circulation and a slowing metabolism, which typically accompany the aging process.

Happy International Volunteer Day!
Today, we celebrate the incredible impact our volunteers makeβ€”both in big ways and small. Whether it's supporting those living with diabetes, raising awareness, or advocating for better care and policies, each volunteer plays a vital role in creating a world free of the effects of diabetes.
Thank you to our dedicated volunteers for your time, passion, and heart. Together, we can drive change, spread hope, and create a brighter future for those affected by diabetes.
