Women's Group is back! ๐Ÿ’œ

It was wonderful to bring our regulars back together in our warm, welcoming space to share lunch, connection, conversation, and laughter.

To kick off a new year for the group, participants completed a Women's Group survey which was followed by meaningful discussion about how to continue to grow not only the group, but other services and supports for women in Community.

โ—CW: This post mentions Aboriginal child removal, assimilation, and inter-generational trauma. If this brings up any distressing emotions, please remember you are not alone. Call Yarning Safe N Strong on 1800 959 563 for free, confidential support 24/7.

Today marks 18 years since then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's formal apology to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, particularly the Stolen Generation.

Since the historic apology, 13 February has been marked as National Apology Day, a time to pause, reflect, and honour Stolen Generations, who still feel the trauma associated with the injustice of the policies that ripped them from their families and Culture.

VAHS Bringing Them Home worker and proud Yorta Yorta, Wemba Wemba woman Aunty Daria Atkinson spoke about her experience not only in her role supporting generations of those impacted by Stolen Generation, but coming to terms with her own removal and assimilation as part of so-called "school holiday programs", which saw Aboriginal children removed from their families for weeks to months at a time and forced to abandon their Culture.

Midsumma Festival 2026 - that's a wrap ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ

VAHS' Charcoal Lane Chill Out Zone was a popular spot during yesterday's Pride Street Party ๐ŸŽง

Through our bright yellow door was a temporary sanctuary with cold water, tea, coffee, snacks, comfy bean bags, mindfulness activities, headsets with podcasts and a friendly crew to have a yarn with โ˜•

Midsumma may be over for another year, but VAHS' commitment to building inclusive spaces for Rainbow Mob is a 365 day a year obligation. No matter who you are, we want to make sure you feel safe coming through our doors ๐ŸŒˆ

โ—CW: Assault

Three years ago Peek Woorroong, Keerraay Woorroong and Djab Wurrung marathon runner Sissy Austin was assaulted while out for a run.

Among the hurt and grief she felt being made to feel unsafe in her happy place, Sissy felt the urge to do something about it, spotlighting the fear and challenges women and gender-diverse people feel while doing something they should be able to do safely - going for a run ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

So she founded National Take Back The Track Day, a movement to raise awareness and end violence and harassment towards women and gender-diverse runners ๐Ÿƒ

Take Back The Track encourages individuals, sports and running clubs, and Community groups to register their run on 15 February and dedicate their run to the movement ๐Ÿ’œ

"Take Back The Track has a vision for women and gender diverse runners to feel less alone, validated, and a sense of belonging. When one female or gender diverse runner is attacked in this country, we all feel attacked, our love for running feels attacked, and we collectively feel a threat," - Sissy Austin.

Our rights are only as good as our capacity to enjoy them. Register your run today https://www.takebackthetrack.com/join-us ๐Ÿ”—
