Animal yoga adventures for kids are so much fun! The best part of teaching kids yoga is the opportunity to ‘be a kid’ again! Tapping into imagination, wonder, curiosity, enthusiasm, endless energy and of course a bit of silliness 🤪 Try it yourself - create a family or school challenge whereby everyone is to create a yoga pose/shape that resembles an animal that starts with the first letter of their name. Better yet, see how many animals you can think up with that letter and a corresponding pose! Feel free to share your results with me!

Kids are just kids, being their own unique selves.. But oh, can they be messy, rambunctious, vocal, excitable, emotional, determined and strong willed! Yet, observe their beautiful innocence when they play. Expressing themselves and exploring the world with such authenticity, curiosity, creativity and imagination.. Just the way it should be. ❤️

Imagine if more kids grew into adults who remained that way! Not driven by expectations, deadlines, standards, social/cultural constructs, pressures, constraints.. 🤔 Thoughts?

Inhale little ones and reach for the skies,
Open your heart, your body and mind,
From the sacred earth feel yourself rise,
Let the life force and pranic energy in,
Let the breath lead you in wellness
And guide you in more than you can imagine ✨

❤️

My daughter handed me her school progress report. Although it displayed a steady stream of positive check marks, there was one check mark standing dejectedly alone from the rest.

“How am I doing, Mom?” my child asked with a level of maturity that did not match the small dishevelled person gazing up at me with smudged eyeglasses that teetered on the tip of her nose. With her small finger, she pointed to her teacher’s neatly printed words next to the lone check mark.

It read: "Distracted in large groups." But I already knew this. I knew this long before it was written on an official report card. Since she was a toddler, this child has offered astute observations of the world around her.

After pointing out all the positives on the progress report, I told her what was written. Upon hearing the news, she gave a tiny, uncertain smile and shyly admitted, “I do look around a lot.”

But before my child could feel one ounce of shame, one iota of failure, I came down on bended knee and looked her straight in the eye. I didn’t want her to just hear these words, I wanted her to feel them. This is what I said:

“Yes. You do look around a lot. You noticed Sam sitting off by himself with a skinned knee on the field trip, and you comforted him."

"You noticed Banjo had a running nose, and the vet said it was a good thing we brought him in when we did."

"You noticed our waitress was working really hard and suggested we leave an extra good tip. You noticed Grandpa was walking slower than the rest of us so you waited for him."

"You notice the beautiful view every time we cross the bridge to go to swim practice."

"And you know what? I don’t ever want you to stop noticing because that is your gift. It is your gift that you give to the world.”

As I watched my daughter beam with the glow of acceptance, I realized her approach to life had the power to change the world.

You see, we are all just waiting for someone to notice—notice our pain, notice our scars, notice our fear, notice our joy, notice our triumphs, notice our courage.

And the one who notices is a rare and beautiful gift.

Resilience. Something I hope our kids will have in abundance throughout their lives.

It already shows in our 3.5 year old boy. As Easter rolled around we made the long anticipated trip out to our family’s holiday home. As soon as we got there and stepped out of the car, our boy was struck by a sudden bout of severe gastro (that was probably caught in kinder).

Poor guy kept wailing “not again!” and “this is no fun!” initially each time he vomited, not understanding what was happening to him or why. We ended up camping out in the bathroom while he threw up for almost 5 hours straight. In his desperation to feel better, he even offered to be taken to hospital, a place he’s somewhat wary of. And of course we contemplated it as it was so painful and heartbreaking to watch, but even still it wasn’t quite an emergency.

So there he was stuck in a bathroom for hours on end, involuntarily sick, while we read to him Noddy. And instead of being curled up on the floor feeling sorry for himself as perhaps I would be if I was in that same condition, he understood that he needed to battle through this. He was determined to “go outside and play” again.

The next morning when he felt “as good as new” (his words), we told him he was so brave and that his body is strong, it heals itself, that it fights viruses. We also said it helps to stay positive. We said he should thank his body. His reply?

“My body should thank ME.”
