Firstly and most importantly, Elijah Hollands deserves to be well supported by all of us – our community, media, his employer, his team mates and his social network. He is now in hospital receiving treatment for his mental illness and I wish him all the very best. He has been very well supported by his family, which makes a big difference.
Secondly, WorkSafe Victoria are now investigating the Carlton Football Club in regards to this incident. This very public case demonstrates the need for every employer to know how to support an employee with a mental illness. It is a legal obligation to provide workplace adjustments, to protect their privacy and to create a mentally healthy workplace.
Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have heard the term “psychosocial safety." It is now a legal requirement in every state in Australia to identify and control psychosocial hazards in the workplace. This has now strengthened the previous requirements in a very process driven, step by step framework. It is not complicated but it is essential that you start now.
If you are a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU), that means CEOs, Executives, Directors and Employers, this is now your responsibility and you are liable for this.

We must all work together to protect, support and promote mental health.
WorkSafe Victoria has entered the Elijah Hollands saga, announcing on Tuesday that they will begin a review into whether Carlton breached an occupational health and safety law.
