KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA)

What is it?

Knee osteoarthritis is caused by thinning of the cartilage around the knee joint meaning that the knee does not move as smoothly as it normally would, making it feel painful and stiff at times, particularly in the morning.

The most important thing to do to help with pain and movement is to keep moving and to strengthen the muscles around the knee to help support the knee.

HERE ARE 4 GREAT EXERCISES FOR KNEE OA 👇🏼

1. Aerobic exercise – walking, swimming, cycling are great low impact exercises that help strengthen the muscles and bones around the knee and to get your heart rate up to burn calories and release endorphins (our bodies natural pain killer!)

Strengthening exercises that can be completed daily (some mild discomfort with exercises is ok)

1. Mini squat

Use a chair or stable tabletop for balance if needed. Slowly bend at the knees and lower body a few inches. Hold position for 5 seconds and then squeeze bottom as raise up as you straighten your knees

2. Knee Extension
Sit in a sturdy chair and loop a resistance band around both legs above the ankle. Keep one foot on the floor as you straighten the other leg against the resistance band.

3. Knee Flexion
Set up in the same position as the above exercise except now bring one foot behind the chair to strengthen the back of the knee. Keep one foot on the floor as you bend the other leg against the resistance band.

To kick off the start of national stroke week here are some hand and arm exercises to complete if you are suffering from arm weakness post stroke. Thanks to neuroplasticity the brain can rewire itself and create new connections that may have been lost post stroke. Repetition is key so get practicing as much as you can 🧠💪🏼

Do you know at 2u we also see children for Physiotherapy? We can help with developing fine and gross motor skills. We love this puddle jumping activity from showing a fun way to improve leg strength and balance 👏🏼🤸🏼‍♀️

If you are unsure if you’re child is reaching their milestones jump over to KID SENSE The charts list the ‘typical’ child development by age and the possible implications if a child has not reached typical developmental milestones. Please note that these charts are only a guide and are in not way a definitive assessment tool.
