I’m feeling deeply grateful that I discovered Hakomi Therapy a couple of years ago.

Although I graduated from the core training last year, there are always deeper layers to explore.

Every time I find myself at a new training, it feels like a homecoming. It’s a sense of belonging that I did not think was possible for me.

This time, we explored how to bring Hakomi into the heart of relationships. From introductions to couples therapy, to working with sexuality.

What a wonderful opportunity to learn from the Co-founder of Hakomi Therapy, Halko Weiss and the inspiring Maci Daye. Both of which are truly embodied examples of their teachings.

Excited to integrate all the insights and apply the learnings in the therapy room.

Art is more than entertainment.

This article refers to creativity and the arts as being the “fifth pillar of health”.

Research has shown that the impact on our mental and physical health is huge.

Even at a purely physiological level, creative engagement has been linked to:

- Slowing of cognitive decline
- Reduction of heart disease risk
- Increased wellbeing

And the best part: you don’t need to be good at art to enjoy the benefits.

How do you bring creativity into your days?

An attitude of curiosity helps us to heal.

In the midst of a chaotic season of life, I made this artwork.

I layered more and more colourful lines on top of each other.

Each line represents another task on my to-do list, or a thought looping around my mind.

I found myself mesmerised by the textures and colours.

Much to my own surprise, I wrote:
“It’s surprisingly colourful when you look closer.”

And in an instant, I could feel the anxiety in my body settle down.

What shifted? I realised that my life was very full. But it was full of colour, and there was something delightful about that!

The longer I sat with it, the more I noticed my stress was coming from doing so many things I loved at the same time.

Approaching the artwork with curiosity gave me a new perspective.

In fact, there was nothing wrong as such. I just had to slow down enough to see it.

The most underrated tool for mental health?

The arts.

100+ clinical journals have found that engaging in the arts through activities such as singing, dancing or crafts reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has also been shown to lower stress for people of all ages.

“Some studies suggest that combining creative arts therapies such as music therapy with antidepressants and counselling can nearly double the improvements in depressive symptoms compared with standard treatments alone.”

Not only do the arts support us when we’re already unwell, they’re also an excellent preventative.

“People who regularly go to the theatre, live music events, museums, galleries and the cinema have nearly half the risk of developing depression.”

2016 planted the seeds for a transformative decade to follow.

- I immersed myself in creativity and challenged myself to create and share artwork for 365 days.

- I sold some of my artwork at markets and online.

- I had the opportunity to exhibit my art at Threshold Festival in Liverpool and had my art purchased by someone before the festival even opened! I also sold a couple more art commissions and had my art displayed in some local cafes.

- I was confronted by the sudden loss of my brother. It was challenging to process something way beyond words. The day after the news I spent the whole day painting.

- In the midst of grief, I went to the Digital Nomad Conference in Berlin. Their slogan was “DNX will change your life” and it couldn’t have been more spot on.

- I poured all my energy into starting my first location independent business from this little office in Manchester. I went all in on my business, and was incredibly grateful to quit a terrible job I hated.

- The rest of the year feels blurry. It happened somewhere between anxiety, dissociation and panic attacks as grief moved through my body. I couldn’t find any photos from this time.

- It took a long time to make sense of things. This was taken in October 2017. It’s probably one of the first genuine smiles after the acute grief. I had just began uprooting my life in the UK and setting off to live as a digital nomad for a couple of years.

- I’m grateful for all the ways the grief impacted me. Everything in my life changed. 10 years on I find myself living on the other side of the world, in a purposeful new career as a therapist, and in a new relationship. Being confronted with a life that’s cut short, was an incredibly visceral reminder of the impermanence of everything. It gave me permission to create, while I have the privilege to do so.

Creativity is medicine.

129 doctors, nurses and other health professionals from London hospitals took part in a study to use group art therapy sessions for burnout.

The results:
• Lower emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation
• Less stress
• Reduced anxiety and depression
• Results lasted 3 months post-therapy

Those who did not receive the art therapy reported feeling around twice as burnt out as those who did.

I started the year facilitating a group workshop at the stunning Prana House. What a joy!

We started with a mindful tea ceremony facilitated by Deepa Ramakrishnan, transitioned into art therapy and community connection. We were also supported by Brooke Isabella Reid who welcomed everyone and helped to hold the space.

It was particularly lovely to see participants connect and work together to create a huge collaborative artwork.

I love seeing how these workshops bring out the childlike sense of play in people, giving them a space to slow down and create without any performance pressure.

Looking forward to many more wellbeing and team building workshops with Reconnect Space this year.
