As a director, support coordinator, and advocate, I find immense joy and fulfilment every time I see the right Support Worker matched with the right participant.
Last week, after a new support worker (M) completed a couple of shifts, the participant asked if she could have more time with M. She expressed gratitude for feeling understood and appreciated the kindness and work ethic M showed. When the daughter had asked me if we could find someone who was "innately kind", we found kindness personified.
This week, when a child participant's mom told her the support worker (T) is picking her up from school the following day, she said "YESSS". Her mom said, "she's looking forward to school pick up tomorrow."
Today, I introduced another support worker (L) to a participant. After just a few minutes of chatting, I honestly felt like I wasn’t even in the room anymore. They discovered so many shared interests and similarities. I watched L engage naturally, confidently, and warmly, happy to help, eager to care, and comfortable enough to shine during their meet and greet.
Of course, there are times when a participant and a support worker don’t quite jive, and that is part of the process. But when a match is authentic, effortless, and almost serendipitous, it feels like I have truly fulfilled my purpose.
During these uncertain times, many people are struggling to find work or are worried about the future. I feel grateful that in my own small way, I am able to create opportunities for people to find meaningful work, work that nourishes the soul while also providing a livelihood.
It is beautiful to watch my team blossom and genuinely enjoy what they do. Just as beautiful is seeing participants look forward to their support workers’ visits, getting to know them, sharing stories, and gradually entrusting their care to people who were once strangers but who often become friends and trusted companions.
This work can be heavy at times. But moments like these remind me why I do what I do.
