For more than six decades the annual Mattara Surf Classic has been run here in Newcastle every year laying claim to being the world’s longest running surf contest!

Once again construction giant Michilis are backing the competition as the major sponsor.

Michilis was founded in 1964 under the guidance of Jim & Tom Michilis (Michilis Bros). The company was built on Honesty, Loyalty & Excellence; philosophies which still govern the organisation today. Now in it's 54th year under the guidance of the second generation of Michilis, cousins Mark & Tom (Jnr)
Michilis have forged a reputation for excellence & experience that is recognised by architects, project managers, contractors, engineers & surveyors.

Surfing Newcastle President Teza Mckenna was ecstatic about the continuation of the partnership between surfing Newcastle and Michilis.

“We are stoked to have Michilis supporting us. The Mattara has such a special place in Australian and international surfing history. The winners’ list reads like a who’s who of Australian surfing royalty, with former champions including Michael Petersen, Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Peter Drouyn and Peter McCabe, among many other household names.”

“We are really proud to have been able to continue the contest right through COVID, despite the disruption to sporting events around the world, and we think 60+ consecutive years of competition calls for a celebration” said Teza.

The dates for this year's competition are October 14/15 and organisers are expecting a healthy rollup to fight for the honour of being on this prestigious winners list.

Entry will be open at www.surfingnsw.com.au/events next week.
