So you had a blood test and found out you were iron or B12 deficient?

Did you stop to ask why?

Have you looked at your dietary intake?

If you’re consuming enough in your diet - then why aren’t you absorbing it?

What’s going on with your gut?

Did you start a supplement… but never retest your levels to ensure that they were restored? This is essential! Just because you’re taking a supplement, doesn’t meant mean you’re absorbing it if the underlying issue was your gut health.

Or are you going to an IV clinic for a vitamin drip to top up on B12 and other nutrients, but never had your levels investigated properly in the first place - you just know you feel better when you get those IV’s? Again, you could be masking underlying issues that have broader impacts.

I think of nutrient deficiencies as the canary in the coalmine when it comes to your gut - the signal that something isn’t quite right and needs to be investigated and addressed so that you can actually feel better.

If you need help with this 👉🏽 book in for a consult so that we can deep dive into your blood tests, along with your signs and symptoms and come up with a tailored plan to optimise your nutrient status and overall health.

Stop settling for sub-optimal health… see you in the online clinic soon! 💁🏽‍♀️

〰️ WORLD SLEEP DAY 〰️

Sleep is one of THE most underrated foundations of health.

When you look at just how many facets of health it impacts, you really owe it to yourself to do everything you can to support better sleep if you want to improve your health and feel the best you can.

Did any of these slides surprise you?

I often hear people claiming that they’ve tried everything to help their sleep, but there is so much more in the toolkit than just medications, melatonin and magnesium. We are often looking at supporting the GABA pathway and nervous system (with a huge range of herbs to choose from), can use plant derived melatonin, specific amino acids, diet and lifestyle adjustments and also consider more complex factors like hormones, histamine, pain, inflammation, sinus issues, blood sugar regulation, light exposure, environmental toxins, gut health and more.

Acute sleep support appointments are an option if you need a quick consult for a personalised prescription. Jump onto the website to book yours!

It’s being promoted as ‘Nature’s Ozempic’, but it’s not for everyone!

Like all supplements there are pros and cons, but when we’re talking about antimicrobial agents we really want to think about protecting our microbes and remember that more doesn’t always = better.

The research is ever evolving in the gut microbiome space and there are studies that suggest both beneficial and harmful impacts of berberine on the microbiome - but sadly I’ve noticed those selling berberine-based products tend to cherry pick the favourable evidence and leave out the rest 🧐

Berberine can have its place when used with respect, but it’s not something I would go taking forever without any professional guidance.

We have plenty of natural treatment options in our toolkit too - blood sugar balancing herbs and supplements as mentioned in the video, but also a wide range of options when it comes to supporting cholesterol, the liver and the gut.

If you’re keen to test your gut microbiome - there’s 10% off for the month of March, so don’t miss out!

Let there be joy in the journey 💫

It can be so easy to get bogged down in the daily grind and then suddenly find ourselves stuck in this negative mindset that seemingly came out of nowhere…

…and hello, that’s a sneaky sign that burnout might be creeping in 👋

This is especially true if others around us are constantly whinging and we get caught up in it - which can easily happen with people close to us like family, friends and co-workers, or even people we listen to on TV, radio and social media. They say you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with and that certainly can have either positive or negative implications for us!

If you can begin to shift towards appreciating the little things, or maybe even start a daily gratitude practice, you’ll find your experience of life can shift dramatically.

So don’t forget to pause, reflect and celebrate as you go - no need to beat yourself up for not being “there” yet. You’re allowed to celebrate the journey - whatever that is for you right now 🧡

Healthy skin starts within!

What you’re doing topically is important, but so is what is happening internally. There are so many factors that can impact your skin health, including:

🔸Diet
🔸Sleep
🔸Stress
🔸Hydration
🔸Gut health
🔸Hormones
🔸Inflammation
🔸Immune function
🔸Nutrient deficiencies
🔸Detoxification & lymphatic flow
🔸Environmental pollution
🔸Alcohol & smoking

Your skin is constantly renewing itself, with the skin cell turnover cycle being approximately 4 weeks (a little longer as we get older).

What we eat directly provides building blocks for the production of these cells - amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins & minerals are required to make our skin cells & sebum, support a healthy skin barrier & reduce inflammation. Our gut health is also reflected in our skin health, so it’s important to support this with sources of prebiotic fibres, polyphenols and probiotics in the diet.

In addition to the key players pictured in this post - other important nutrients such as Vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12 and folate are all big players in skin, energy and immune health. If you’re anaemic your bloodstream has reduced oxygen carrying capacity, which can give that appearance of dull, pale skin and also impact nutrient delivery. These are nutrients that can be assessed with a blood test to ensure that you’re at an optimal level to look and feel your best.

Of course there are functional tests and supplements that we may reach for to investigate and support skin health, but it’s important to simultaneously get your nutrition foundations in check for long-term results and seek personalised advice regarding the best options for you.

The start of a new year can trigger all sorts of wild goal setting - but maybe you’ve only ever thought about diet and exercise goals because it’s what is marketed so heavily at the start of a new year 🤔

There are many facets to a life well lived, with all of them potentially impacting our health and happiness if out of balance.

I’ve come across the Wheel of Life concept a few times over the years, sometimes by other names such as the Wellbeing Wheel or just as a visual representation of our human needs.

You can use it as a review activity to assess how you’re feeling about different areas of your life and to help you to prioritise those that may need some TLC… because so many factors impact our wellbeing and experience of life - not just our health and fitness.

By rating each area out of 10, you can identify where you may want to focus a bit more attention. Maybe work and finances are great, but it’s at the expense of your health and relationships - maybe it’s the opposite! Maybe you’ve forgotten about hobbies that light you up, or have fallen into negative thinking patterns. Everyone will find things that are unique to them.

Then ask yourself - what could I do to turn that 2/10 into a 3/10? Can I start taking baby steps to get there, or do I need to seek additional support from a professional? Whether that’s a counsellor, psychologist, mentor, a health professional.

Don’t forget to find the things to celebrate too… it’s so easy to constantly focus on optimising and skip past acknowledging the good things.

I’d love to know if you’ve done this before, or give it a go!

Shedding more than usual?

If you swipe across you’ll see some of the many factors that can be involved in hair loss/thinning/shedding… and the crazy thing is, there are even more ‘one size fits all’ hair supplements out there claiming to be the solution 😵‍💫 We’ve got to explore your case specifics and figure out your underlying factors, not reach for a random supplement!

I’ve been noticing more hair fall myself in the last week or two, which is unusual for me, so it has made me stop and think.

The last time I remember this happening was in my late twenties, a few months after a super high stress period in my career and life that caused rapid weight loss and frequent illness.

Then I remembered how stressed I felt last October and it dawned on me… that was 3 months ago - this is stress related telogen effluvium!

Telogen what…?!

Let me explain 👇🏽

Stress related hair loss doesn’t happen immediately - the stress shocks more hair follicles than usual to move into the resting ‘telogen’ phase prematurely. The hair then sits in that phase for 3-4 months as part of the natural hair cycle before falling out. So that results in more hair falling out at once than would normally occur… about 3 months later!

Whilst Telogen effluvium can become chronic, in most cases it is temporary and hair fall usually returns to its normal baseline in 3-6 months, as long as the stress resolved and everything else such as nutrition and hormones are check. Density often improves within 6 months.

Have you experienced this before?

If you need help figuring out your own challenges with shedding or hair loss, let’s work together 🤝

Sometimes the simple things really are the best.

On this day I looked at what I had in front of me and instantly thought omg I must make bruschetta with this!

🍅Home grown tomatoes.
🍃Basil from my parent’s garden.
🥖Olive sourdough (so obsessed).

Served with a decent layer of cottage cheese for some extra protein… and to attempt to hold it all together 🤭

It’s so nice to have fresh herbs at hand - not only do they smell soooo good, most herbs are a concentrated source of nutrients and powerful compounds that can support our health. I remember running my hands over the different herbs in the garden as a kid and inhaling those aromas - sage and oregano were my favourite - two wonderful antimicrobial herbs!

I do worry that we are losing the benefit of herbs in our diets with the shifts towards processed, preprepared and packaged foods that use sugar, salt and artificial flavours instead.

Are you still cooking with herbs? Even dried ones? Have a look at your pantry and garden and see where you can increase the convenience factor eg. growing your own in pots or building your collection of dried herbs and finding ways to use them more often.

The bruschetta pictured could easily have used dried oregano instead of fresh parsley - I remember it being sprinkled all over Greek salads when I was in Greece!

If you have handy tips of your own, feel free to share them in the comments 💚🌿

Hi there 👋🏽 I’m Mel and I’m so glad you’re here!

I’m a degree qualified naturopath consulting Australia-wide via my online clinic . That’s right, you can access naturopathic care no matter where you are in Australia 💚🌿

My journey to becoming a naturopath began in my late twenties, following my own experience with chronic fatigue syndrome and burnout - the classic ‘wounded healer’ story that is so common in the healing professions. This health crisis led me to take a chance on seeing a naturopath and resulted in a subsequent recovery that conventional medicine just couldn’t provide 🤯

My brain needed to understand this more and as a result I became obsessed with figuring out fatigue and all of the contributing factors… discovering first hand that a highly personalised, holistic approach is crucial when it comes to improving or optimising someone’s health status. There is no ‘one size fits all’ magic pill, sorry!

In clinic, I support people with a wide variety of health concerns, from general wellbeing and nutrient deficiencies, to chronic and complex conditions. I delve deep into blood test results with all of my clients and I love testing and optimising the gut and vaginal microbiomes to get to the bottom of ongoing concerns in these areas too.

When you work with me online your personalised treatment plans are delivered straight to your inbox and you can fill your herb and supplement prescriptions online to be shipped direct to your door!

If you know it’s time to turn your health around and are looking for a holistic, compassionate approach, you’ve come to the right place 🤝
