A common problem people present to us with is an “abscess” or “dead” tooth which may or may not be painful. Here are some images of a normal ligament surrounding a tooth and what an “abscess” looks like on a scan. The infection and it’s resulting destruction of the facial bone is clearly visible. 🦷

Gum disease occurs when tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth (your gums) becomes infected. 🩸🦷

The infection of the gum is caused by plaque, which is bacteria that forms on teeth.

There are two main types of gum disease:
💢 Gingivitis — a mild form which occurs when gums become red and swollen. Gums may bleed easily when they're brushed and cause bad breath.
💢 Periodontitis — a severe form which occurs when gums become weak, creating gaps for germs to get trapped. This leads to increased swelling and over time your teeth may become loose or fall out.

You've probably already guessed it, but the best way to prevent gum disease is to brush your teeth and gums twice a day, and floss once a day. It's important to do this, even if your gums are bleeding. 🪥

If you think you may have gum disease, it's best to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Gingivitis can be cured without permanent damage, but periodontitis can't be cured, only controlled.

For years people have debated who the first female dentist in Queensland was.

Although Martha Burns is recorded as being the first female to graduate with a dentistry diploma in 1907, we have chosen to share the story of Myra Rendle Mackenzie (pictured). She was the first woman to actively practice dentistry in the state. 🦷

The daughter of a well-respected physician, Myra began her 4 year dental apprenticeship in 1895 when she was only 14 years old. 🤯

Diploma courses weren't available in Queensland back then, so dentists learned their skills on the job. Immediately after completing her apprenticeship, Myra opened a dental practice on the corner of Queen and Edward Streets in Brisbane.

Myra later went on to open a dental surgery in Townsville to help alleviate the shortage of dentists in rural and remote areas.

In 1916, Myra moved to New Zealand, married, and later had a son. After her husband was killed in action during WWI, she moved back to Australia and practiced as a locum in Brisbane for a short time before retiring.

Such an interesting time in Queensland's dentistry history! 🤩

Our Story

Bright Smiles @ Brightwater dental practice is the result of Dr Innes' vision to bring complete and comprehensive dental care to Sunshine Coast residents, while providing a comfortable and relaxed environment in which to optimise patient outcomes. The community of Brightwater is master planned, and one of its key features is a community focused shopping and healthcare centre. Dr Innes was approached by the property developers to work with other health care providers to develop a modern community focused medical, dental and allied health facility in Brightwater. In depth planning was undertaken, and the development came together in 2013. The result of many years of hard work is the brand new purpose designed and built Bright Smiles @ Brightwater dental facility. The practice offers not only a proactive and preventative approach to dental care, but also a wide range of dental treatments. Our aim is to support the dental needs of the surrounding community in the most relaxed and accommodating manner possible. We have assembled a professional, caring and enthusiastic team consisting of both front office and clinical professionals whose focus is your individual needs.
