🟔 Birth Trauma Awareness Week 🟔

What is birth trauma?

There is no one definition of a "traumatic birth". What matters is how YOU felt- during the experience, and in the days, months and years afterwards.

You know your body, your own heart, mind and your baby best. If the birth felt in any way distressing for you, for any reason, you may be experiencing birth trauma. No-one else can tell you ā€˜how’ your birth was, when you’re the one who lived through that experience.

The way you feel about your birth experience can deeply affect your emotional wellbeing and mental health, attachment and bonding with your baby, and how you feel about being a parent.

Signs you may be experiencing birth trauma include:
šŸ”ŗ Distress or anxiety when you think about your birth experience
šŸ”ŗ Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts about your birth
šŸ”ŗ Nightmares
šŸ”ŗ Hyper-vigilance about your baby's health and safety
šŸ”ŗ Difficulty sleeping
šŸ”ŗ General feelings of panic or anxiety, being "on edge".

If you think you might be experiencing birth trauma, or have complicated feelings about your birth experience, PANDA is here to listen.

Remembering all service men and women today. The sacrifices that were made from all who served, their loved ones who were left behind, the heartache, the lives that were lost, what was endured, the life long memories, trauma and effects upon their return.
Paying a deep respect to all those who served, risked their lives and/or lost them, and those they did this for a country that didn’t acknowledge theirs. For those who fought for freedoms which they wouldn’t get to experience and the freedoms we are privileged to have today.

We will remember them.
Lest we forget

You can always ask for more information, ask any questions you have, the evidence/statistics behind what’s being said/suggested, ask for more time if that’s what you need, and decline anything that isn’t feeling right for you. Having the information and knowledge to be able to make the best and informed decision for YOU. You always have a choice, regardless of policy.

Doulas aren’t for just homebirths and unmedicated births.
A doula can provide care and support to ANYBODY and ALL types of birth, regardless if this is your first, or fifth pregnancy. Hospital, Homebirth, Caesarean birth, Birth Centre birth. I will support you wherever your birth takes you.

Doulas don’t replace your partner or midwife.
A doula helps to support and care for everyone involved. Doulas will actually encourage your partner to be involved and share with them what this could look like. A midwife is medically trained health professional.

Doulas are NOT for birth only.
A Doula can support you through pregnancy, postpartum, infertility, loss and/or full spectrum care. A Doula can assist to connect you with other services related to your situation, like a lactation consultant, counselling services, women’s health physio, bodywork and much more. A doula also makes sure you are equipped with the knowledge you need, to be able to make informed decisions and advocate for yourself and your family.

A doula will NOT argue with medical professionals.
A doula is NOT there to argue with medical professionals or take over. That is certainly not the motive at all. My goal as a doula, is to work together with all care providers as a team, not to tread on anyone’s toes or create tension. It is soooo important that you feel safe, heard and have trusting relationships with all your care team. You, your birth and care are priority.

Doulas aren’t all hippie.
Welllll they could be, but does it really matter? It’s just like anything, the world is made up of all different types of people in all different roles. Some Doulas might be a hippie, but this doesn’t mean all Doulas are hippie.

You absolutely deserve to have access to a doula and the type of support and care a doula offers, plus lovvveeess to give.

Informed choice and using BRAIN

Have you heard of B.R.A.I.N before? Is it something you used?

Having to make on the spot decisions can be extremely overwhelming. This tool is fantastic to assist you with decision making for labour, birth and beyond. It’s a great way to pause, catch your breath, gather your thoughts and consider all of your options before making a decision.

It is extremely useful to use, especially when interventions are being offered or you come to a bit of a bump in your path, requiring you to consider options on which is the best way for you to proceed. Its also a way to have productive discussions with your supports and care provider, making sure to ask all of the questions. So that you can confidently go forward with your decision, knowing that you are making the best decision for yourself and your baby, giving informed consent.

It is only doing yourself a disservice, by not finding out as much information as you can before making decisions on anything that is suggested to you.

Asking for help.

I struggle & I mean really struggle, to ask for help. I know I’m not alone in feeling like this. Although, when I am asked to help, I literally froth over it. I LOVE being asked to help someone out. Maybe the people in your circle feel the same too?
I’ve read in book, The Postnatal Depletion Cure, ā€œStaff not visitorsā€ in those first few weeks. At first, I thought it was very abrupt, initially making me uncomfortable at the thought of putting a boundary in place (hello people pleasing) the content he shares on this & why, makes so much sense. Those first few weeks, is such a vulnerable time healing, getting to know each other, find your groove caring for your beautiful baby, sleep deprivation. The only people that should be visiting & coming into your little bubble, are the people you feel completely comfortable if they were to see you in your pjs, your house a mess etc. The ones who would comfortably call in with zero judgement, make you a cuppa, chuck a load of washing on & fluff around doing things to make life a little easier for you. Who in your circle you would feel comfortable to ask? If you have people offer their help, take them up on that offer, I’m sure they will be stoked to be able to help out, & honoured that you asked. It doesn’t have to be anything huge, or something that’s going to give you more stress & anxiety around asking, tasks that help to lighten the load a little.

🌼Could you please collect my groceries for me?

🌼Could you please help me with daycare/school drop offs & picks ups?

🌼Could you please hold the baby while I shower or have a snooze?

🌼Could you please take (other children) for a park play/milkshake?

| Postpartum Care |

Over here at The Nurtured Journey Doula, you will hear me bang on a lot about Postpartum Care. It’s something I’m extremely passionate about and believe it to be a necessity in setting up the foundations for a lifetime of mothering / motherhood. We need to stop expecting the work of many, to be placed upon one person and then expect them to thrive and be able to show up daily as the best version of themselves. Its unachievable and results in resentment, burnout and depletion. Postpartum care is caring for mental health, emotional health, spiritual health, physical health.

We are living in a world where productivity and worth is portrayed to look like a constant hustle, a competition of how busy you are and how many plates you can juggle. I too have been caught up in this mentality and am slowly unlearning, un-conditioning, whilst relearning. It’s a work in process, but slow and steady wins the race, right? I am seeing some movement around this mentality which excites me, the reframing of busyness into the slowing down and being more present.
Postpartum care is going back to basics, it’s community and village coming together, actual hands-on support, nutrient dense food, rest, slowing down, allowing and surrendering to the help.

Resting, healing, nourishing, slowing down, IS productive.

Just popping in for a quick update. We are 12 weeks post partum over here and feel as though we are slowly emerging out of our bubble a little. There has been lots of pj wearing, snugs, mess, chaos and it’s been the best….most of the time 🤪 Fourth time around I’ve noticed I’m a lot better at surrendering and embracing the season that is.

I’m so excited (insert happy dance) This morning was the first session of a mentorship I have become apart of. Cup is feeling very full, was nice to share space with likeminded women within birthwork community. I feel so grateful to have access to this type of learning and am looking forward to what’s to come.
