Our story

Centrally situated in Newcastle, in the heart of Hamilton, Hamilton Yoga – Iyengar Yoga School has evolved from the first Iyengar-based yoga studio in Newcastle NSW, previously known as ‘Novocastrian School of Yoga’, established by David Morley in 1996. hall at Gregson Park has been welcoming loyal yoga students of all ages and abilities. We are a fully equipped, very spacious and light-filled yoga studio to practice in. David Morley, owner and headteacher at Hamilton Yoga, brings over 29 years of consistent teaching experience to his students and has been certified with the world-renowned Iyengar yoga teacher certification by the Iyengar Yoga Australia Association in 1999. We teach yoga authentically based on the Iyengar yoga tradition to students from beginners to advanced. Classes are offered 7 days a week.

BACKBENDS
Backbends are always invigorating.

This week, in our experienced classes, we focused on backbends, revisiting some gems uncovered during our Spring Intensive in September.

We explored Matsyasana (Fish Pose) and Paryankasana (Couch Pose) - two deeply connected poses that both open the upper body, arch the spine, and lift through the chest while resting on the crown of the head with the arms extended in Urdhva Baddha Hastasana, while the seating position is different.

With bricks supporting our backs, students courageously embraced these heart-opening postures. A special applause to those who balanced in Paryankasana on the vertical brick, affectionately referred to as “the stump” 👏 Inspired by Mr Iyengar’s prop from RIMYI.

Our senior students took it a step further, experimenting with Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana using the wall ropes, enjoying the sensation of a free arching back.

This week, we also explored dropping back from headstand to the wall into both Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana and Setu Bandha from shoulderstand.

We will conclude the sequence of backbends in this afternoon’s class, Sunday Progressing L1 at 5 pm. As always, we are working with each student’s individual capacity while still finding a healthy sense of challenge.

What a wonderful 4 days we’ve shared together!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our Spring Intensive at Hamilton Yoga.

In the Intensive we explored Iyengar’s intensity scale of poses (his scale goes from 1 to 60), focusing on the 1–5 range, which already offered plenty of depth for all of us in the room.

In this Saturday's Level 2 -Advanced class, we’ll take some time to revisit the poses from the Intensive, including some of the restoratives, and devote some time to those that felt a little more complex.

We look forward to rounding off the week with you all.

Next week, you’ll be happy to know that our time-honoured tradition of ‘requests’ will be due, where we sequence together requested poses from the students present.
