✨ The Thoracic Sling ✨

The thoracic sling is one of the most important regions in your horse’s body. It’s a group of muscles—including the serratus ventralis and pectorals—that literally hold the trunk up between the front legs.

A healthy thoracic sling means better posture, freer movement, improved balance, and reduced strain through the forelimbs and back.

When the thoracic sling isn’t functioning well, you might notice:

🐴 A “downhill” appearance or dropping through the chest
🐴 Toe-dragging or shortened front stride
🐴 Difficulty lifting through the wither
🐴 Unbalanced canter transitions
🐴 Hollowing the back or bracing through the neck
🐴 Leaning on the forehand
🐴 Saddles slipping forward
🐴 Struggling with lateral work or tight turns
🐴 General stiffness or reluctance to go forward
🐴 Girthiness

Supporting the thoracic sling through osteopathic treatment, correct groundwork, stretching and postural exercises can help your horse move more comfortably and freely.

✨ Can Osteopathy Help Improve Behaviour in Performance Horses? ✨

Behaviour is communication — and so often, those “tricky” or inconsistent moments under saddle are your horse’s way of saying something doesn’t feel quite right.

In my latest blog, I dive into how osteopathic assessment and treatment can support:

🐴 Improved comfort and mobility
🐴 Better focus and willingness
🐴 Reduced tension in horses who brace, rush or resist
🐴 More consistent performance overall

If you’ve ever wondered whether behaviour and biomechanics are connected, this one’s for you.

Functional Posture – Why It Matters 🐴

Functional posture is how a horse organises their body to move, balance and carry load efficiently.

It’s not about standing “pretty” — it’s about:

• how weight is distributed
• how joints stack and move
• how muscles support movement without excessive tension

Have you noticed that your horse always prefers to graze with one foot forward? This can result in asymmetry.

One simple way to support functional posture is through variable feed positions.

By offering feed at different heights and locations, we encourage:

✨ balanced muscle development, and improved core stability
✨ stretch through neck and shoulders
✨ healthy joint and spinal movement

This variety helps prevent the horse from always loading the body in the same way and supports more adaptable, balanced movement patterns.

Combined with osteopathic treatment, variable feed positions can help reinforce positive postural changes and support long-term comfort and function.

✨ Hind End Mobility for the Golden Oldies ✨

Max — a young-at-heart 23-year-old — enjoying some gentle hind end mobilisation techniques to help keep him comfortable, supple and moving well.

These slow, controlled mobilisations support:

⭐ Improved stride length
⭐ Better engagement and push from behind
⭐ Reduced stiffness through the hips and pelvis
⭐ Overall comfort for ageing bodies

Max might be a senior, but he’s proof that regular, tailored bodywork helps horses feel and move better at any age. 💛🐴

If your horse could benefit from a mobility session, send me a message to book.

🔹 Body Awareness Touch

One of my favourite things about bodywork is when a horse “talks” to me — those soft eyes, a little lean into my hand, a wiggle of the lip when I find the spot. It’s not just bodywork… it’s about connection.

Slowing down, listening, and letting them show us where they’re holding tension and where they feel good, and then the release of their tension.

Those moments of communication are pure magic 💛

Those little conversations remind me exactly why I do what I do — their wellbeing means everything. 💛

Gentle massage to help release the muscles before joint mobilisation 🐴✨

By softening tension first, we make it easier for the body to restore natural movement through the joints — without force and without stress.

Comfort → Mobility → Performance 🤎

✨ Breeze feeling his best ✨

It’s amazing what consistent bodywork can do 🌿

At 20 years young, this handsome guy is moving and feeling better than he did years ago. With regular osteopathic treatments, Breeze has been relaxing through his back and neck, building comfort and freedom in every stride. His cheeky personality shines even brighter when his body feels good 💛

Supporting our golden oldies with ongoing care helps them stay strong, supple and happy — whether it’s training days or chilled paddock life.

So proud of this sweet guy and how far he’s come 🫶🐴
