The days are getting warm but, remember, summer doesn't mean hypothermia isn't a risk! Even on warm days, your patients can lose body heat fast.

Here's 3 reasons why you should pack a thermal emergency blanket in every trauma kit:

1. Shock from blood loss – Major trauma shuts down the body's ability to regulate temperature. A thermal blanket prevents further heat loss while you manage the bleeding.
2. Near-drowning incidents – Even in warm weather, extended exposure to water can rapidly drop core body temperature. Wrapping your patient will help stabilise them until you get them to hospital.
3. Sun exposure or long extrications – If you’re treating a casualty outdoors, you can use a thermal blanket to create shade or protect them from direct sunlight.

With 7 of the world's 10 most venomous snakes calling Australia home, knowing how to respond to a snake bite can make a real difference to patient outcome.

The Pressure Immobilisation Technique works by slowing the flow of lymph (the pathway venom uses to enter the bloodstream). By applying a firm pressure bandage and immobilising the limb, you're slowing the spread of venom and buying critical time until the patient reaches definitive care.

The Premium Snake Bite Bandage from Aero has rectangular indicators that turn to squares when correct compression is achieved, taking the guesswork out of your technique. You can find it on our website either individually or part of our TacMed Snake Bite Kit, which has everything you need in a handy vacuum sealed kit for less than 20 bucks.

Spring is snake season. Make sure you're prepared with the right kit and the right knowledge.

On this Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the courage, service, and sacrifice of all Australians who have served our nation.

As a proud veteran-owned company, TacMed holds this day close to heart. We remember those who served, those who returned carrying the memories, and those who never came home.

We also remember the values they stood for - mateship, endurance, courage, and quiet strength in the face of adversity. May we continue to live by those values every day, and ensure their legacy endures.

The first few minutes after a major bleed are critical.

An ambulance won't come fast enough. You are the first responder until help arrives.

That’s why it’s vital to carry a kit built for real emergencies.

The Tasmanian Tiger Tactical IFAK is compact, organised and loaded with quality trauma gear like a 4" Emergency Bandage, SOF® Tourniquet and HyFin Compact Chest Seal - giving you the tools to treat critical injuries.

Massive haemorrhage is one of the leading causes of death in trauma emergencies. With only minutes to death from a significant arterial bleed on a limb, you need to be prepared to act fast - even if you don't have a proper tourniquet on hand.

That's where this method comes in.

Most basic first aid kits will have a triangular bandage and a pair of shears. Using these two bits of kit, you can create an improvised tourniquet that can buy you time until help arrives.

Remember:
→ Genuine tourniquets (SOF-T or CAT) are always best
→ Only use for life-threatening limb bleeding that can't be controlled by direct pressure
→ Follow manufacturer's guidelines (usually 5-10cm above wound)
→ Never over joints
→ Tighten until bleeding stops
→ Note the time and monitor the wound

This is a great one to practice on a mate so you're ready when it matters. Have you learned this technique? Let us know in the comments.

PART TWO. We already showed you the figure-8 technique to bring your patient's feet back into natural alignment. Now here's how to properly position and secure a SAM Pelvic Sling.

One of the most common mistakes when splinting the pelvis is wrong placement. Your splinting device must sit over the greater trochanters - NOT the iliac crest.

The SAM Pelvic Sling's force-controlled design removes the guesswork on how much compression to use. Pull the strap until you hear the click, then lock it with Velcro and you're done.

This is a great kit addition for anyone providing trauma care in more remote settings.

21/10/2025

A fractured pelvis can hold over 3 litres of blood. Splinting can minimise the space for blood to fill.

To do this, you should start by bringing your patient's feet together and immobilising with a triangular bandage in a figure-8.

Next, if available, apply a Pelvic Splint over the greater trochanters.

PART TWO drops tomorrow - see how and where to apply a SAM Pelvic Sling.
