A quick trip to Melbourne where the temperatures were freezing but my heart was warm after spending two days at the ANZACBS conference and two days at the pre-conference workshop. This community is wonderful and I learn not just how to be better as a psychologist but also as a human.

Yesterday, I said goodbye to my office space of three years in Neutral Bay. It was cosy place and I enjoyed welcoming clients to it. But it sold to new owners and July was spent feeling stressed while looking for a new place that wouldn’t be too difficult for my clients. And eventually, I found a space in North Sydney.

Sunday was spent moving in and setting it all up and I popped in this morning to hang up my pictures, all ready to welcome clients from tomorrow. There’s a few finishing touches needed in the waiting room; I find the walls too bare but we’ll get there.

A friend told me how I was starting this new chapter on the first day of spring and I like to think of this as new beginnings. It’s okay to feel sad about what we leave behind while also feeling excited about what this new space can bring.

This book! Wow. A great read for those with complex PTSD but also, a great one for all the therapists out there to learn what not to do and what to do instead. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Foo herself and by the end, I was crying happy tears for the love she gives others and the love she has got. It’s harrowing to read about the abuse initially but it’s also moving to see the changes and healing begin. Listening to bits by her therapist made me feel validated as a therapist too because I’ve been trying so much more in the last few years to focus on the process rather than just techniques like we are taught straight out of uni and resort to in our early career days. All this is to say, read the book!

At the start of this month, I attended four days of the ACT Bootcamp in Denver, Colorado. It was an incredible few days of learning and immersing myself in ACT with Steven Hayes, Robyn Walser, Miranda Morris and Diana Hill. It was a privilege to learn from some of the greats, validating to know the things I’m doing well as a therapist while also adding so much more to my toolkit. My heart was full and head was buzzing by the end of it. It was worth the trip from Sydney.

Interestingly, my flight home was cancelled (the connection from San Francisco) and it was basically an opportunity to practice ACT on myself! 😅 But that’s a whole other story. For now, I’m eager to put my learning into practice.
