💉🩸 It’s Diabetes Awareness Day! 💉🩸
💙 Imagine this…
You’re at work, and a colleague suddenly looks pale and shaky. They’re sweating, confused, maybe even slurring their words.
You think they just need to sit down — but it could be something far more serious.
They might be having a hypo — a sudden drop in blood sugar caused by diabetes.
It can happen anywhere, anytime —
and knowing what to do could save a life.
🍬 Here’s what to do:
• Give them something sugary (juice, soft drink, jellybeans).
• Once they start feeling better, follow up with a longer-lasting snack (like milk or a sandwich).
• If they become unconscious — call 000 and place them in the recovery position.
🩺 Did you know there are different types of diabetes?
• Type 1 Diabetes – An autoimmune condition where the pancreas stops producing insulin. It often starts in childhood or adolescence, but can appear at any age. People with Type 1 rely on daily insulin to survive.
• Type 2 Diabetes – The most common type, where the body doesn’t use insulin effectively. It’s linked to genetics, lifestyle and age — but it can often be delayed or prevented with healthy habits.
• Gestational Diabetes – Develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after birth, but increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Over 1.9 million Australians live with diabetes — and many don’t even know they have it. That’s why awareness and first aid education are so important.
💡 Knowing the signs and how to respond could make all the difference — at work, at home, or in your community.
Let’s keep talking, asking questions and educating the community around diabetes 💙
