Before you throw away those old clothes and cardboard boxes, have you thought about the importance of allowing your child to 'pretend play'. Pretend play encourages imagination, creativity and supports social and emotional development in children. It also helps to develop self esteem, communication and problem solving skills. Additionally pretend play enhances physical development through the use of gross motor and fine motor skills.

Consider creating a prop box or corner filled with items that spark your child’s imagination.
- Large plastic crates and cardboard boxes for creating a “cubby”.
- Old clothes, shoes, backpacks and hats.
- Old telephones, phone books and magazines.
- Writing materials for writing notes, taking messages or making a shopping list.
