Map4Life is about showing people with a spinal cord injury (or similar injury/physical disability) what the career options are within the spatial/mapping industry. Our research has lead us to understand that there are many young people who through a work, car or sporting accident have become wheelchair bound and are not aware of what a job in “spatial” could offer them. This community event aims t
o provide opportunities and show people with a physical disability such as a spinal cord injury what career options there are within the spatial and mapping industry. David Bruce, the founder of Map4life, was provided with a great opportunity to study surveying and mapping and this has provided him with a great foundation for a varied and long standing career. The Map4life project is in the form of an event that will discuss and exhibit what career options there are, how they can study these and the benefits of them which will be demonstrated and spoken about by professionals in this industry along with accompanying sponsors and spokes people. Our sponsors and support will create short presentations and demonstrations on what they have developed as a career as a result of studying and practicing in the spatial and mapping industry. With so much date work now being produced in digital formats anyone with basic computer skills and analytical capability can process and produce information such as 3D models, satellite images, climate change data and demographic and business information. All of these data sets play an active role in every persons life within our now technologically advanced society; be Google maps for finding a way to a restaurant, through to businesses who map where their products are selling best and why. The possibilities and opportunities are endless! The event is planned for late June and the organisers are in the final stages of selecting a firm date and a venue - more to come in the next few weeks.
