Keys here has been presenting with a sore back and general discomfort under saddle. You can see in the first clip the twitching and ducking away from my fingers along his back. After time spent using massage techniques and red light therapy, he was a lot more comfortable

Reposted as with a lot of horses being kept in longer and exercised less due to wet weather, it is important to keep an eye on our horses muscles.

A little diagram to highlight the importance of monitoring gluteal muscle mass. The gluteal muscles are truly a window, providing a view in of the quality of exercise and the bodies response to training. Atrophy or weakness can have an unzipping effect, causing other areas of the musculoskeletal system to be compromised and at risk of injury.

It should also be noted that this solely considers muscle mass, and not tonicity; where a muscle should be well developed, this shouldnโ€™t compromise on the quality of the muscle.

That feeling when you release all the built up tensionโ˜บ๏ธ

Honey letting me know that she is releasing a lot of tension and stress in her hind end. This is great sign of relaxation and relief in horses!

Walk is an a effective way to mobilise the back - here are 4 ways to improve the walk and increase back rotation.

๐Ÿ. ๐–๐š๐ฅ๐ค ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ
This can be a single pole or a series of poles. This is a great exercise to maintain mobility, improve core stability, posture. There are so many benefits.
Set up some poles on the way to the arena, or field so you can walk your horse over them everyday.

๐Ÿ. ๐–๐š๐ฅ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ
A similar effect to walking over poles, but your horse doesn't have to think about where he's putting his feet but still has to lift his legs.

๐Ÿ‘. ๐–๐š๐ฅ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ
You can feel the rotation in your horse's back through your seat. If you can find a consistent slope - try walking your horse across the slope too.

๐Ÿ’. ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฎ๐ฉ
A great exercise that has lots of benefits. Aim for long steps with the head and neck low for maximum benefit. Start off with just a few steps and build up.

BlackJack and Cinch enjoying their massages on Saturday!

These two boys were just getting a once over before their camp drafting clinic to find any little issues and resolve them.

Iโ€™ve massaged BlackJack a few times and he doesnโ€™t normally give any signs of release besides the odd sigh here and there but he was thoroughly enjoying himself this time and we even got some yawns out of him!

Hi all! Apologies for a short absence, quite a hectic polo season but Iโ€™m back and better than ever! Stay warm everyone!

Riding trot-walk-trot transitions are great for improving engagement of the hindquarters and the quality of the trot. They are also beneficial for calming and slowing an over-enthusiastic horse.

Try riding the transitions in the corners of your arena and gradually decrease the number of walk steps in each corner โ€“ as shown in the picture below. ๐Ÿ‘‡
