Your Community Health welcomes the historic passing of the Treaty Bill in Victoria.
This milestone marks the beginning of a new chapter, one that recognises the sovereignty of First Peoples and creates a path for truth-telling, self-determination, and shared decision-making.
We acknowledge and honour the decades of leadership, advocacy, and tireless work of First Peoples, including the critical roles of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and the Yoorrook Justice Commission, in carrying this vision forward. Treaty has been generations in the making, driven by commitment to justice and healing.
For health, Treaty means change: a stronger voice for First Peoples in shaping the systems that affect health and wellbeing, greater accountability in government, and an opportunity to redesign services so they are led by and responsive to First Peoples’ priorities.
Your Community Health stands in support of Treaty as a crucial step toward health equity, self-determination, and a fairer Victoria for all.
We remain committed to working with local Aboriginal organisations and communities as Treaty is embedded.
Government bureaucrats, no matter how well-intentioned, don’t know what works and doesn’t work for our communities – we do.
If we want to see improvements in health, education and housing for our people, the practical solutions need to come from us.
As the democratic and representative body, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria will be made permanent to make sure our communities are properly represented. Assembly Members will continue to advocate for our needs, hopes and aspirations.
