TENSION HEADACHES
Did you know, that there are many causes or contributors for tension headaches?!?
Stress, poor/lack of sleep, diet inadequacies, hormones, dehydration, posture and quite commonly tight/tense muscle leading to trigger points (knots) are just some of these contributors.
How can tight/tense muscles make headaches worse?
Have you ever pressed down on a 'sore spot' but for some reason, it gives of pain somewhere else? These are called Trigger Point referral patterns. Tight little noxious nodules that can form in a muscle often caused by over/underuse, injury or dysfunction. These bad boys can send pain in different areas, sometimes tricking us into thinking other areas are the problem. A perfect example of this is the Massater muscle (jaw muscle) which often gives pain straight into the side temples.
How can myotherapy help?
We'll start the treatment by identifying the symptoms and location of the pain and then do a quick movement assessment to see if there are any abnormalities in your movement (or if certain movements reproduce the pain).
Myotherapy can help relax the muscles, pinpoint areas of dysfunction and use certain techniques to both gain range of motion and help alleviate any nasty trigger points.
And we all know massage is a great de-stresser!!
What can you expect?
Time is taken to warm the tissue. The neck in particular has a great way of protecting itself and if pressure is applied too hard too soon, the body will switch to fight or flight mode and won't accept any change. 'Sweet spots' are then identified and manually worked on, this may be uncomfortable as it often reproduces the headache pain however this is done within individuals thresholds and never goes above a 7/8 out of 10 in terms of discomfort.
After the treatment, it is common and normal to feel exhaustion and possibly a little sore is some key areas, however this subsides within 24 hours.
What can be done to help yourself post treatment?
