Balancing Diabetes

Balancing Diabetes I am passionate about working with individuals to find a balance that works for them and improves their quality of life. Welcome to Balancing Diabetes.

My name is Sarah Free. I’m a Credentialled Diabetes Educator with over 13yrs experience and prior to that, 25yrs nursing (including Cardiac Intensive Care & Education of Nursing Students). I come from a place of understanding and compassion due to personal experiences of living with an individual with type 1 diabetes for 15yrs, myself having an auto-immune disease and my lifelong interest in health, nutrition and activity. Over the last few years insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring and then NDSS Support for Type 1 Diabetes, has come a long way, so I’m happy to help individuals embrace these elements into their lives to decrease the burden of Type 1 Diabetes and reduce glucose variability (improve “time in range”). To further support this I am proficient in Carbohydrate Counting education. My services begin with an initial comprehensive assessment consultation, so I can understand client needs and help them to reach their goals and improve their own health outcomes. I recognise the importance of the multidisciplinary health team, cultural background, mental health and personal circumstances and continue my own professional- development in these areas so I can provide current, best-practice services tailored to an individual. I offer experience supporting NDIS clients (who are plan or self-managed) with all forms of Diabetes management, while being aware of the need to understand and support their NDIS goals. Where appropriate, I involve support workers and can help coordinate other health services for clients (if relevant to their diabetes). Due to the impact on diabetes, cardiovascular risks, and fatty liver, I am continually updating my knowledge about nutrition and can provide healthy eating and weight loss advice with a focus on addressing the hormones that control appetite and fat storage. If clients are interested, I offer a low carb real food or ketogenic approach, to improve overall health and well-being. I support long-term sustainable lifestyle changes rather than short-term “diets” and “yo-yo” weight changes. I offer flexible appointment times with the options for after-hours, business hours and/ or Telehealth consultation.
