What to expect from my new parent support group:

The main aim is to bring parents together to support each other and that I will set goals and agenda according to the shared needs identified in the group.

The group will be a responsive and targeted program that will be shaped by the participants priorities. I will draw on all of my experience as a psychologist and theories and models such as attachment theory, emotion coaching principals, Circle of Security etc.

I envision that there will be a lot of discussion about emotional regulation, supporting your children’s social development, working together with school/kinder or daycare, understanding the service system, advocating for your child, self-care etc. I will consider getting guest speakers as well if there is interest in that idea.

Most parents in the group will have a neurodivergent child, some are not the biological parents and some may be neurodivergent themselves.

The group size will be capped at 8. So I can create a safe and trusting environment.

A podcast about Tuning into Kids. I love this program, it is a great way to change your mindset about your children’s behaviour and see moments of disregulation as ā€œopportunities for connectionā€. Circle of Security is still my ā€˜go to’ parenting program, but I love this one too!

What happens when we welcome children’s emotions rather than minimising or dismissing them? This episode explores the benefits of an emotion-focused approach...

We could all do with a little guidance around this topic. Plus eventually the kids are going to need to manage it themselves without guilt and shame. This is also a good reminder that you don’t have to solve all the problems yourself, just learn to ask the right questions so that you can guide them on how to self manage.

Use these 12 conversation starters to help your child make thoughtful and healthy choices about their screen use. Learn how to have conversations that build trust and help them recognize how social media can impact their feelings.
