What If Mental Health Education Started with Emotional Literacy at our schools? 🧠

As a Family Doctor as well as a School Doctor, I often have to help kids and their families with struggles around poor emotional health.

One can frame this as their “EQ” perhaps. EQ for Emotional Quotient (also often called Emotional Intelligence).

Some struggle mainly with processing the “feelings of others” leading to predominantly social anxiety.

Some struggle mainly with processing their own feelings/emotions leading to shame, anxiety, anger, emotional dysregulation, self-doubt, and depressed mood.

Some especially with ADHD/ASD wiring, can struggle immensely with both.

Counselling whether it’s in the form of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), Psychoeducation, ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy), EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy), IPT (Interpersonal Therapy) are simply ways of teaching “Emotional Literacy”.

I hope that if we can frame “therapeutic frameworks” as “emotional literacy”, more kids can have access to the above skills at a school level, and if as a society, we are more emotionally literate, then less mental health issues perhaps.

We’re pleased to welcome Dr Justin Chow to the team.

Dr Justin completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Queensland and has worked across a range of Queensland hospitals, including The Prince Charles Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

He enjoys caring for patients with both acute and chronic medical conditions and is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centred care grounded in clear and honest communication.

Dr Justin is available Monday to Thursday and every second Sunday.

Outside of work, Dr Justin enjoys playing football, piano, and spending quality time with family and friends.

✨This week, we welcome Dr Jahnavi Chaudhari to Priority Health Medical Centre at Orion Springfield Central ✨

Dr Jahnavi Chaudhari grew up in New Zealand and completed her medical training in Australia. She has worked at Gold Coast University Hospital and The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, gaining broad clinical experience across emergency medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiology, respiratory medicine, and psychiatry.

Dr Jahnavi is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for individuals and families. Her clinical interests include chronic disease management, cardiology, women’s health, paediatrics, and skin health.

Her approach focuses on building strong, trust-based relationships so patients feel heard, respected, and supported. She strives to make a positive and meaningful difference in the lives of those she cares for at every stage of their healthcare journey.
