BREAKFAST! 🥐🍌🍳🥓
Some love it and some don’t!
🥳🥳🥳 Good news! It’s not a magical factor to whether or not you will instantly gain weight, have zero brain cells working the rest of the day, be asleep at your desk at 11am, go into starvation mode, turn into an alien and all the other weird and whacky things that happen if you DARE TO SKIP BREAKFAST.
🤦🏽♀️ Look, I have to be honest here, I am guilty for telling past clients how important breakfast is too. It’s one of those myths that has been ‘trending’ on and off for what seems like forever and in some ways it ‘makes sense’ However we should never be giving advice just on what ‘makes sense’ to us 🤦🏽♀️
There are observational studies (Cho et al 2013, ONeil et al 2014) showing the relationship between breakfast consumption & lower BMI/better health markers were consistently found.
However there are also observational studies concluding that breakfast skippers tend to have worse lifestyles (Uemura et al 2015) They tend to be less health seeking and go to bed later (Reutrakul et al 2013)
So I’ll leave it to you to decide what you think there.
Here are the juicy details on the studies I mentioned in the post…
📖 Fulford et al 2015 – The effect of breakfast versus non breakfast on brain activity in adolescents when performing cognitive tasks as assessed by fMRI concludes there was no statistically significant improvement in task performance.
📖 Dhurandhar et al 2014 – A recommendation to eat or skip breakfast contrary to widely espoused views, had no discernible effect on weight loss in free-living adults who were attempting to lose weight.
📖 Betts et al 2014 – showing cardiovascular health markers unaffected by eating or skipping breakfast.
💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
So to conclude - it really is personal preference again! If you skip breakfast and then feel like crap and it leads to a crappy day then sure eat breakfast. Don’t listen to the gimps saying ‘It’s better to eat something than nothing’
That’s how we’ve ended up with zuped up hobnobs as breakfast biscuits or weetabix milkshakes (just a sugary milkshake) disguised as healthy breakfast options 🙄
If skipping breakfast is an effective way to reduce your overall daily calorie intake and you find it doesn’t have any negative effects on you the rest of the day then it can absolutely be a smart method to watch your energy balance.
Side note: if your goals are performance based, speak to a nutritionist about meal timings as they do play a part it optimal performance results. This post is just for us standard folk trying to control the ole energy balance 😜
Any questions, hit me up.
Do you skip breakfast?
