Coach Jenna Marie Home to Jenna Marie Nutrition. My mission is to get you to invest in a healthy lifestyle. Jenna-rating the best you!

I have this page with the hope to inspire/motivate at least one person everyday. If this means someone does a workout I have posted, or reads a standard motivational quote which is enough to get them to make a better choice I will be more than happy. I believe life is a made up of a series of choices, and if I can help you make a better choice we're both winning. Here try this, quit smoking, never eat MacDonalds or drink Coke Cola again :) haha just messing hmm well not really :)

I was going to write a list of things I enjoy doing but it was so long I thought I'd summarise it. I LOVE DOING STUFF.
'We all have the same 24 hours a day, what we choose to do with them defines our life'

I have recently spent 10 months working as a strength and conditioning coach at Tiger Muay Thai and MMA Training Camp, the biggest fight and fitness camp in South East Asia. I love to travel and work with different people from all different walks of life. I am happiest when I am learning :)

BREAKFAST! 🥐🍌🍳🥓

Some love it and some don’t!

🥳🥳🥳 Good news! It’s not a magical factor to whether or not you will instantly gain weight, have zero brain cells working the rest of the day, be asleep at your desk at 11am, go into starvation mode, turn into an alien and all the other weird and whacky things that happen if you DARE TO SKIP BREAKFAST.

🤦🏽‍♀️ Look, I have to be honest here, I am guilty for telling past clients how important breakfast is too. It’s one of those myths that has been ‘trending’ on and off for what seems like forever and in some ways it ‘makes sense’ However we should never be giving advice just on what ‘makes sense’ to us 🤦🏽‍♀️

There are observational studies (Cho et al 2013, ONeil et al 2014) showing the relationship between breakfast consumption & lower BMI/better health markers were consistently found.

However there are also observational studies concluding that breakfast skippers tend to have worse lifestyles (Uemura et al 2015) They tend to be less health seeking and go to bed later (Reutrakul et al 2013)
So I’ll leave it to you to decide what you think there.

Here are the juicy details on the studies I mentioned in the post…
📖 Fulford et al 2015 – The effect of breakfast versus non breakfast on brain activity in adolescents when performing cognitive tasks as assessed by fMRI concludes there was no statistically significant improvement in task performance.
📖 Dhurandhar et al 2014 – A recommendation to eat or skip breakfast contrary to widely espoused views, had no discernible effect on weight loss in free-living adults who were attempting to lose weight.
📖 Betts et al 2014 – showing cardiovascular health markers unaffected by eating or skipping breakfast.

💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

So to conclude - it really is personal preference again! If you skip breakfast and then feel like crap and it leads to a crappy day then sure eat breakfast. Don’t listen to the gimps saying ‘It’s better to eat something than nothing’
That’s how we’ve ended up with zuped up hobnobs as breakfast biscuits or weetabix milkshakes (just a sugary milkshake) disguised as healthy breakfast options 🙄

If skipping breakfast is an effective way to reduce your overall daily calorie intake and you find it doesn’t have any negative effects on you the rest of the day then it can absolutely be a smart method to watch your energy balance.

Side note: if your goals are performance based, speak to a nutritionist about meal timings as they do play a part it optimal performance results. This post is just for us standard folk trying to control the ole energy balance 😜

Any questions, hit me up.

Do you skip breakfast?

This classic ‘magic fat loss’ myth comes from an easy misunderstanding so let me see if I can help you know what’s really going on...

Glycogen (our carbohydrate store) is our bodies preferred source of energy so will be used first. Once we have depleted our glycogen stores we will start to use our adipose (fat) stores for energy.

So by doing cardio first thing in the morning before breakfast you will have ‘fasted’ for 12ish hours (depending on what time you had your last meal the night before) and the idea is your body will have depleted it’s glycogen stores by using that fuel/energy just to keep us alive through the night therefore if we go straight into cardio our body will have to oxidise (burn/utilise) our fat stores for an energy source.

So yes, so far so good for all that ‘fat burning’ goodness right 😍

However, it is only an acute response to that bout of exercise and our bodies are extremely clever and bloody love nothing more than balance and homeostasis so although more fat burning occurred in that say 60 minutes of fasted cardio, over the other 23 hours of the day your body will slightly adjust your respiratory exchange ratio (your carbs/fats metabolising ratio) to balance it out.

I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t please ask! Ask in the comments because if you’re thinking it, so is someone else 😃

This does not mean you should stop doing fasted cardio. Personally I like getting up and getting it done before I’ve eaten 😃
Delaying your first meal will also result in a smaller eating window which MAY benefit your dieting goals 🧐

If you try and do your workout before breakfast and have zero energy and end up with a half assed workout you are DEFINITELY better off working out later in the day with more energy 💃🏽🕺🏽

Bottom line is fat loss is down to energy balance ⚖️

Cardio fasted or fed is personal preference. Do what works best for you 👊🏽💥

Tell me in the comments if you like fasted workouts or not 😃

To conclude - For weight loss, replacing foods/drinks with low calorie sweetener alternatives works. There is no strong evidence for the effects of sweeteners on health.

Any questions hit me up.

If you found it helpful, be sure to like, tag friends that might find it useful, share it on your page. The more people engage the more likely I’ll post more stuff 😬

Lots of myth busting coming over the next few weeks.

A tease for some of the subjects to come... Fasted cardio

10 weeks ago I made a pretty big career decision which meant I’d have 12 weeks to finish my current job as of the 4th February.

Coincidently had a 10 week challenge that was due to start on the 4th February also. I figured that if I joined it might offset some of the stress over the next 12 weeks and give me something else to focus on! To focus on myself, daily choices to better myself and most importantly my health, the reason I’d made the original choice to quit my job (thoughts summed up in the 5th picture here - swipe to read ➡️)

So 10 weeks later with just two weeks left of my notice period, I can say it really did do exactly that! I’m looking forward to finishing my job knowing I’ve given it 100% the whole time and am sooooo excited about what the future holds 💫

The first three pics are natural with no filter as they are the ones I submitted for the challenge but the last pic is instagram filtered because it’s instagram after all so why wouldn’t I turn the ‘structure’ up to 100% on a pic showing my abs 🤣😂🤣

Also I PR’d my squat clean today!
Gain 🚂 !!!! Chooo choo
Will upload video after this!

Make sure you’re following my other instagram page >> cos in two weeks time it’s about to get off the chain exciting!!!! 🚐

If you got this far, thanks for reading legends!

Heart is full ❤️

Grateful to be coached by the best 🙏🏽
Put the sound on to hear giving me some top advice for building muscle....

“Embrace the burn. That’s what you’re chasing. Not time, not reps, just the burn”

Most of my training is CrossFit style. I’m always chasing the clock, the reps, the time, other competitors and I LOVE that style of training so I found this session with Mike really challenging mentally more than anything but was so good and keen to work on it.

Jake and I are doing a leg session with Mike in a couple of weeks. RIP legs 👋🏽

I’ll let you know how it goes 🤪
