Savouring Day 7 - The end of our 7 days!

Today my son and I searched for lizards in our garden. I don't often just lay down and look through the window into the garden, but it was a lovely moment of stillness for both of us. The lizard did not reappear but we did enjoy talking about what we could see and focusing on the light on the leaves.

I had planned to draw a memory for my last image, but this moment was special and a nice surprise! A joy :)

I hope you have enjoyed following along from home. This practice has been helpful for me to focus on the good things, and I hope you have noticed some joyful moments in your day to day as well. Let me know how this has impacted you :)

Savouring Day 6.

We put up our Christmas tree last week (anyone else?? πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚). I love turning it on in the evening as the sun goes down and watching the lights. Simple. Pretty. Joyful.

What have you savoured today? 🌼

Day 5

Oops! I missed posting this yesterday 🫠 we have sick kids and the day got away from me.

Anyway, I got out some paints for myself while the kids were watching a movie but as soon as they saw mums special paints they were keen to help! So this painting is a collaboration, which turned into an unexpected moment to savour. I sometimes forget the wonder kids have for learning something new and the excitement of using their hands to make a mess πŸ˜‚

Savouring Day 3 πŸ™‚

On Monday I bought an amazing soup for lunch. Today I had a go at recreating it at home πŸ˜‚ and it turned out pretty good! I love soup on a chilly windy day. I savoured my moment of stillness as I ate my soup and watched my kids play together outside. Joyful πŸ™‚

Savouring Day 1!

Today I drove from St Helens to Fingal. The sky was cloudy, it was a bit windy. But the movement of the clouds above created shadows on the mountains below, in the distance, both before me and behind me. It was a real moment in time, quiet in my car, to just watch and observe the changing colours. A moment. A joy for today.

Our 7 day journey has 2 options for each day.

OPTION 1
Is to purposefully take time to do something that you know brings you joy.

Take 5 - 10 minutes to yourself, and do something you enjoy. Just something simple - listen to your favourite song, drink a coffee or tea, stand in the sunshine - whatever it is. Just do that thing, nothing else, and hold in your mind and in your body how it makes you feel - refreshed? Joyful? Thankful? And let the moment happen.

OPTION 2
Is to be on the lookout for a moment or experience that you notice brings you joy.

Take the time to fully experience that moment. Slow down, stop and just be there, no distractions, no judgement, just be and enjoy the experience and positive feelings. It might only be a few seconds, it could be minutes if you have them. Hold in your mind and in your body how it makes you feel - refreshed? Joyful? Thankful? And let the moment happen.

NEXT
Create something that represents that moment in some way - draw, take a photo, or even write a poem. Remember that thing or activity that you savoured. Don’t just draw it, but represent how you felt while doing it, what you noticed about that object/activity, why you savoured it, what is special about it for you. We are not looking for a masterful artwork, but a creation that means something to you and that captures that moment for you. No judgement, no criticism, just feeling and being and creating.

~OPTIONAL STEP~
Share your creation in the post on the Wildflower Art Therapy page and let us know you are joining the journey. Share your joy! :)

What is savouring?

What will be be focusing on in our 7 Days of Savouring?

Simply put, savouring is mindfully enjoying something. We might relate savouring only to enjoying the taste and possibly texture of food. The moment we realise we really like a food, we slow down and just enjoy eating it, purposefully noticing and focusing on the taste and what it is about that food that brings us pleasure.

We can do the same with moments in our day to day life - taking notice of something that brings us joy and pleasure and intentionally slowing down to experience and appreciate it. This is savouring - it is not just noticing that something brings us joy, but the intentional choice of thinking about it, of experiencing it and letting it take over our senses. It could be a food, but it could also be a sound, a feeling, or a physical experience like the sun shining on your face. The possibilities are endless.

And it turns out that savouring moments in actually good for us! Focusing on and immersing ourselves in positive things in our day to day life can improve our overall mental health, help grow in us a positive outlook and an awareness of our bodies and minds. All good things.

Start noticing the things that bring you joy today and take a moment to appreciate them as they happen.

It has been a bit quiet over here at Wildflower Art Therapy, as I have spent much needed time refreshing, reassessing and working on things in the behind the scenes.

As we head towards the end of the year, time seems to speed up and often we are scrambling to get everything done or we feel as if we are lurching towards the finish line of Dec 31. We lose the space for intentionality and being present in the moments. So next week I am beginning the journey of 7 Days of Savouring. A intentional decision to slow down and savour one thing, one moment, one joy, each day for 7 days, to help me be present, let go of perfection and remind myself of the joy that can be found in little (and big!) moments throughout the day.

I invite you to join me, to find one thing to savour each day, and then to represent that in some way - to draw it, take photo, or write a short poem - even just a word, to represent that moment. For yourself. We are not after perfection, not listening to self-criticism, but just taking and enjoying the chance to feel, to breathe and to create.

You are welcome to share your creations here on this page along with me, as we journey together through this 7 days, or keep it just for yourself. Either way I hope you join this journey and find some joy for yourself.
